Kambrea

"Brea, go across the street and get De for me when you're done getting ready. His father should be here soon. Hurry, the amusement park is going to be full today. I can feel it."

My mom pops her head into my room while putting in a diamond earring.

It looks new. Mateo must had gotten them for her.

"Mom, I don't wanna hold everyone behind. I'm still looking for something to wear. Can Braylen go?"

Lies, I already knew what I was going to wear. I just didn't want to see that shit face guy across the street.

She steps into my room and still struggles to put the earring in.

Her silky hair is in a messy bun and she's wearing a striped romper with a white shirt underneath. White Birkenstocks are on her feet, completing the outfit.

"It's an amusement park and the beach, sweetie. We're going to be having fun. Appreciating the universe. Dress comfortable!"

"So...let me guess. Braylen's still in the shower?"

"Yep. Now hurry and do as I said, my humanly creature." She walks out while humming to herself.

I throw on a comfortable gray skirt with a matching long sleeved crop top.

It was hot outside with a cool breeze today. My body was sensitive to any type of breeze, so this choice of outfit was just fine.

I sit on my bed, grab my Nike Vapormax's, then hear my phone's ringtone beside me.

It's a FaceTime call from my bestfriend. My finger immediately swipes right on the screen.

"Hey, Mera-go round. See what I did there?"

"Wow...is De already turning you into a humorless asshole?" She laughs on the other end and food is stuffed in her mouth.

"Never. What are you doing today? I miss your dumbass already."

"Kind of wanted to come with you guys. But for one, it's too soon. Also, it's hotter than the bottom of a witches' ass out there. And two, my mom wanted to go somewhere with me. Without...him. I'm kind of excited, actually."

I tilt my head in the camera of my phone and smile just from seeing anticipation in Mera's face.

But also from knowing that she wouldn't be getting hurt while I'm out, hopefully enjoying myself.

"That's so good. I can't fucking explain how much better that just made me feel." I place the phone down beside me on the bed and start putting on my shoes. "Mera?"

"Yeah."

"Everything's been...fine lately? I mean, with you and your mom. With him? Is it settling down?"

"Actually...yeah, it kind of has. You know the cycle though. It always comes back. But recently, he hasn't done much. Only mentally. And I'm grateful enough for that. I mean, how much of a bitch would I look going into school with a bruise under my eye. The guys there would literally be on the very back of my ass, you know."

Mera tries to laugh at her own joke. It's a slow laugh, one with thought behind it. She's trying to cover up how she really felt. Like she always did.

God, I wish we were in person.

I can tell she isn't lying, though. I might sound like my mother right now but...you can always feel it.
