"A real friend is one who walks in when the rest of the world walks out."
– Walter Winchell
As I walked through the corridor, the flashing lights of the party were fading, the distinguished voices were disappearing and the music was toned down, I realized I was on the end of the hallway, I looked to my right side and I saw a bright light of the bathroom and one body on the floor, and a second body standing, I squeezed my eyes to see who was the one standing, it was my friend...my best friend.
Chapter One : Sunset
JOHN'S DIARY: As soon as I opened my eyes, I saw the yellow light shining on my shadowboxers poster, I felt the warm air rushing through my skin, typical Elpida County morning. My room was a mess and so was I.
I never realize my room is a mess until it's Monday and I have one hour to get ready. I jumped out of my bed as soon as I realized I was late, I got ready and took my backpack and left.
If it was some years ago, I would say bye to my mom before I left, but since she decided to drink, she turned herself into someone I don't know, some say there was a reason for how she is now, my father passed away when I was very young, no one besides my grandmother was around my mom, and that was not enough to hold her shoelaces before she fell. So no, I didn't say goodbye to her, I don't think she even remembers me, and if she does, she'll forget soon.
The sun was twice as hot today, I'm not surprised since I live in Arizona, the motorcycles were stopped at the highway bar near my house, the lights of the cafe was turned off and the neighbors started their daily routine, Mr. Ross watered his flowers and Mrs. Litzen walked her dogs through the dusty streets, my house is the only one whose windows are closed all day and the gardens are dead and the pool is empty, and don't feel sad for me, I'm used to it. I walked until I reached my friend's house, Naya, she got out her one floor home running to hug me, and as a good friend that I am, I hugged her back. Naya lives close to my house so we usually go to our school together, we talk about the same things all the time, what would happen if we lived in New York, what are our favorite spot in the town park and what are we going to do as soon as we graduate, which is in six months.
Naya is my friend since my mom decided to go nuts. She has been with me since I needed to run from home because all of the photo frames were thrown all across the house and there was no way I could sleep safely. Naya had very bright brown hair, caramel-like. Her eyes were a black-hole of darkness and her skin was sun-kissed, she truly was a god's gift of beauty. On that day, her skirt was dark green with white stripes, a black blazer and a white tank top, such a weird choice of outfit, but not for Naya, she wears exactly how she wants and what she wants, and if you're not comfortable with that then it's definitely not her problem.
"You're late but I forgive you!" Naya said to me.
"My bad..." I said " I lost track of time".
"Like the fourth time this week ?"
"Shut up!" We laughed a bit.
When we walk to school, we talk a lot, but today was different, it was like something was about to happen and we decided just to listen to the sound around us. We were silent all throughout the first half of our walk, until I could feel the small inner talk of Naya, she was rehearsing something she needed to say, all I could do was wait for whatever was coming for me.
"Aren't you scared of what will happen as soon as we graduate?" Naya said while still looking towards our path to school.
"I don't know, I haven't had the time to think about that, I just know I won't miss some people there!" I tried to break the seriousness of her conversation.
