the truth was, sadie wasn't ready for this summer. she wasn't ready for all the inevitable scolding she was going to get from laurel and susannah. she wasn't ready for the hot, sunny days. she wasn't ready to go back to the summer house. she wasn't ready for all of belly's boy drama. sadie had a sneaking suspicion that belly's crush on conrad might bring too much drama, especially since her feelings for jeremiah weren't crystal clear either.
yet, here she was, in a car on her way to cousins beach, against her better judgment. she hadn't been to the summer house in two years, ever since her mom died. she didn't want to go this year either—or any other year, for that matter. the summer house had lost its magic for her. it still held some of the best memories of her childhood, but it just wasn't the same.
now, she was dreading that place. she knew that the moment she stepped inside, she would be flooded with emotions. some core memories of her mom—ones she had long forgotten—would resurface, and she would be a sobbing mess once again.
her mother had died in may, two years ago. since she passed right before summer, their father had suggested they skip going that year, and they had reluctantly agreed. that was the first summer the three families hadn't spent together. katherine's—sadie's mother's—death had deeply affected susannah and laurel, considering the three had been best friends since college. that summer was especially hard, but the kids did their best to keep their mothers' thoughts away from the tragic accident.
this year, laurel and susannah had insisted the two girls come. they weren't exactly sure why, but they agreed nonetheless—they simply couldn't say no. susannah had given them a speech about how this summer could be their last one together, not realizing that those exact words might not have been the best choice. their last summer together had been a long time ago...
they were supposed to drive there with laurel, steven, and belly, but piper refused. she was eighteen now and wanted to travel alone. sadie didn't argue with the logic—she didn't want to spend hours trapped in a small car with belly's awful singing, steven's complaints, and laurel's constant scolding over seemingly irrelevant things. she also wanted their car to be there, just in case she needed a way to escape if things got too overwhelming.
"belly says they arrived," sadie said after checking her latest notification.
piper took another puff of her cigarette and nodded absentmindedly. sadie didn't mind the smoke—she was no stranger to cigarettes.
"we're thirty minutes away," the older girl said, tossing the cigarette out of the window before focusing back on the road.
