fourth of july had always been a special day of the summer. it was that one day that the fathers joined the kids and the moms at the summer house. while it was weird to have them there, they didn't really belong there, it was nice seeing all three families together.
that year was no different from the rest. andrew, adam and john were on their way, each of them not too far away. the kids had placed their guesses on who would arrive first, steven and belly had their votes for their dad john, sadie and piper placed bets on their dad, along with conrad while adam got only one, seemingly pity vote from jeremiah.
true to the tally, andrew was the first to show, even though he was the one furthest away. "dad!" piper called out once she spotted her father. he had a bright smile on his face as he watched his two daughters run to him. they greeted with a big hug, cheers and laughter. katherine walked behind her daughters, an amused smile on her lips.
"andy!" she smiled at him. he let go of his daughters once he heard his wife's words. andrew's smile didn't falter for a second, she greeted him with a kiss on the cheek. loud footsteps echoed from the house and soon everyone else was outside to greet the man too.
everyone liked andrew crawford, it seemed. between all of the dads, he was the one who tried the most, not just with his own daughters but with the fisher brothers and the conklin siblings. it was no surprise that the rest of the kids were more than happy to see him too.
"hi boys!" he greeted the fisher brothers. jeremiah was hesitant, he was sad his dad wasn't the first one to show. conrad, however, seemed more than happy. he always liked mr crawford. the man would take the boy out sailing, something he really enjoyed, an activity they really bonded over, something he wished he had with his father.
the conklin siblings greeted him too, with laurel and susannah hot on their tails, hugging him and welcoming him back home. cousins beach was andrew's home, not anymore but it was at one point. at one point that place is all he's ever known.
small talk erupted within the group. a bunch of questions were directed at andrew about his trip, he was tired but he'd never admit it, so he'd just smile and say that it was fine not to ruin the mood with the complaints of his back pain.
"why don't we move this to the pool?" susannah suggested. nobody really answered, they all just stared making their way to the desired location. just as they were about to disappear behind the tall trees, another car pulled up. recognizing the vehicle steven immediately took off shouting for his dad. soon everybody followed.
"i though you wouldn't come," katherine spoke up, making her husband stop in his tracks. they were the only ones left. "it's the fourth, katy. i always come for the fourth," he spoke like it was apparent. katherine watched him, her face void of any emotion. "i though you hated this place," she deadpanned.
andrew sighed, making his way to the pool and putting his bag on one of the chairs, katherine following behind. "i do hate this place," he confirmed.
he took a seat as she continued to speak, "then why the hell are you here, andrew?" he sighed deeply, extremely annoyed by the question, "i already told you why i'm here. stop pestering me with stupid questions, katherine." he shot at her.
"you said you'd burn down the house the next time you're here," she reminds him of his words from just a few weeks before. his eyebrows shot up in surprise, not remembering saying that, "it's a figure of speach. i'm not gonna burn my parents' house."
she sighed deeply in exhaustion. walking over to the table she poured herself a glass of wine, andrew watched her. "i thought you said you quit."
"i'm on vacation."
"you're unemployed."
her jaw clenched in anger, "be quiet," she shushed him. he scoffed in disbelief, sitting up from the chair he made his way to katherine. whispering the next words, "you haven't told susannah and laurel?"
she rolled her eyes, taking a gulp of the wine from the glass. "oh, please. i don't want their pity." she scoffed. andrew rolled his eyes at his wife's stubbornness, there was no shame in not having a job.
"i have a job interview when i get back to washington anyway," she informed, downing the rest of her drink. he eyed her as she poured herself another glass. "it's ten in the morning and you're already on your second glass," he pointed out.
the woman took a sip, "actually it's my third. and why the hell do you think you have the right to count my glasses of alcohol?" andrew rolled his eyes, he was pissed and was starting to regret coming, "for god's sake katherine," he began, "i'm just looking out for you."
"fuck off," she spat, taking yet another sip. "go cry about it."
"katherine, i'm here for our daughters and for you. so, please just for once properly pretend like everything is fine," his voice was begging. a plea in his eyes and katherine knew that he was right. she put the glass down and nodded her head.
"are you really selling the house?" she whispered out the question. andrew hesitated, he did really wanted to sell his parents' house and forget about that place, put it far far in the past but his children and wife were already so tied to cousins beach that there was no point in running away.
that place was there to stay; to bring andrew right back to his miserable childhood whenever it was mentioned. "i found a couple interested in buying the house. they're coming in a few days to check it out." he informed.
"so... you're really just letting it all go?"
