the sun has slowly begun to set. the sky wasn't its normal colour, insted it was a beautiful reddish-orange and purple. sadie used to be obsessed with sunsets when she was into photography. every day after school she would take her camera and go to the roof of the highest building on her block and just take pictures. but, the most beautiful pictures would always be the ones she took during the summer in cousins.
she entered the jewellery store. sadie's favourite part of someone's birthday were gifts. the sheer joy on the person's face when they open the gift, and then the realization of how much thought was put into it always made sadie happy and fulfilled. the fact that the best gifts are the ones in which were put more thought than money always made sadie value sentimental more.
"welcome! how may i help you today?" a boy with shaggy blonde hair behind the glass showcasing greeted. he smiled which made the dimples on his cheeks prominent. he didn't look much older than sadie. she smiled back, looking through the various different pieces. "i'm looking for a sweet sixteen present for a really close friend." she chuckled.
the boy chuckled too, his blue eyes scanning the jewellery displayed, "what were you thinking? a bracelet? necklace? errings?" he questioned. the girl hummed in thought. "i haven't really thought about it," she smiled awkwardly. she expected the boy to immediately get annoyed at her but to her surprise he didn't, he actually sympathetically smiled.
"let's then figure it out together, shall we?" he was charming, sadie deducted. she nodded her head and started looking through the display closely. a necklace with a boat pendant caught her attention. it was a fitting gift given that they have been on a boat together many times. ultimately she decided against it, she didn't want to gift her another necklace. the majority of the pieces were summer-themed which made sadie's job a lot easier.
she cursed herself in her head, how stupid of her to look for the present at the last minute when she knows she was indecisive. everything in the shop looked beautiful but she wanted something that had a meaning, a deep but obvious meaning.
she scanned the showcase again, and again, and again. it was like each time she looked the less she saw. all of the jewels just morphed into one big precious metal ball. all the sparkle was beginning to give her a headache.
"what about this?" the boy's voice made her look up. he was exiting the back room, which she didn't even notice he had gone to. he was carrying a black velvet box. he put the box down and opened it.
it was perfect, her breath hitched. it was exactly what she was looking for.
inside was an anklet, a beautiful silver anklet with several different-looking seashell charms. sadie slowly lifted the jewel and put it in the palm of her hand to inspect it closer. "you like it?" the boy asked. she returned it back to the box, smiling, "it's beautiful. i'll take it."
the boy smiled back, "amazing! i'll pack that right up for you," he closed the box and moved to the cashier register. he took out some bags, boxes, gift wrapping paper, and ribbons and he got to work.
when belly and sadie were little they used to go to the beach and look for different kinds of seashells. it was their hobby for the longest time. it was something just the two of them did, it was something that made them as close as they were.
sometimes those searches would take them hours and hours, sometimes they would be successful while the other times they'd end up empty-handed. at the end of the day, the seashells, they didn't matter what did matter were the words and laughs they shared. they haven't been seashell searching in the longest time and sadie had to admit she missed it.
"you aren't local, are you?" the boy questioned, breaking the girl out of her thoughts. she thought about it, "yes, but no?" the statement came out as more of a question. the boy cut off a piece of ribbon and then looked up at her, rising an eyebrow. "i come here ever- almost every summer, to my friend's summer house. my dad was a local though," she briefly explained. the boy nodded, continuing his work, deciding not to pry much more.
"you look a little young to be this good at your job," she joked. he was good, but then again it could have been a lucky guess. the boy smiled, "my parents own this place," he told. "that would be $63,17." she pulled out her credit card and handed it to him.
once he finished, he gave her the receipt and her card, handing her the bag as well, "thank you for purchasing at langston jelwes." he smiled. she laughed at his formality, guessing that's just what he had to say to all of his customers. she took the bag, "i should be thanking you, actually. i'd be showing to a birthday party with no present if it wasn't for you."
he smiled again and sadie had to admit his simile was incredible, "i'm dylan." he introduced himself. she bit inside of her cheek, "i'm- i'm sadie."
they stared at each other for a few seconds, and if she wasn't mistaken she felt a weird spark. "am i going to see you around?" she tucked a strand behind her ear and shyly smiled, "yeah, yeah. i think you will."
