"I am sorry", he finally managed to say.

"Sorry for what, Hay?",

"I will be traveling next week, six days from now".

The words didn't seem to have an effect on her since her countenance remained the same. Had he been scared in vain or it was because she hadn't understood what he was saying?, he asked himself.

"I don't see how that is getting you all worked up, babe", she retorted with a slight annoyance and stress in her voice.

Hayden grabbed her hands and led them to seat on a street bench nearby. He took in and out exhausting breaths before he started.

Hayden had gotten a scholarship from an examination he took two years back. He had quite forgotten all about the examination since no reply was forthcoming after the exam.

And just about two months ago, he received a mail congratulating him on what he had lost his hopes on. He could finally get the best chance to study and finish up his course outside their country, since that was the final stage. Also it was a program set for two years.

If he succeeded, which he was sure he would, he knew what benefits he stood to gain and it was hard not to get attracted by the catchy profit.

It was all he had dreamt of making in life, but it didn't seem to be at the right time for him, it could have been the two years before but things hadn't favored him that way.

He had been very excited about the mail and immediately started making preparations on it. He actually didn't feel like involving anybody in his plans as he did not want any setbacks or distractions and that included Keila, his girlfriend and his family.

And that was why he had put them all out of his plans, secretly getting things ready. He feared his parents might decide to stop him since he had told them he was engaged and he was scared his girlfriend would not support him since he wasn't going to get married while he was on the course.

It was going to be great distraction for him and he needed to make this. He couldn't be saddled with family responsibility.

Recently he got all his papers and documents ready and felt that was the best time they knew what he had in mind. Guilt kept creeping in all along for keeping such huge news, but Hayden couldn't help it.

Finally he had braced himself and called keila to explain things to her. He knew by now that he was almost ready, she wouldn't stop him and he was confident she loved him enough to stay.

Keila felt dumb and worthless after Hayden's revelation. She couldn't believe her ears or listen to any more of what he was ranting. Her eyes immediately clouded with tears.

They had been together for almost two years and if things worked as planned, they should be married the next year.

To find out that Hayden kept such news from her for over two months, rendered her feeling very disappointed. It was hard for her to slowly process all he said since it came in a rush and he was really going six days from that moment. How should he expect her to cope?, she asked herself.

She had thought they kept no secrets from each other no matter what, and this made her feel she was an agent of setback in Hayden's life as long as he felt keeping his progress a secret from her was right.

She jerked her hands free from Hayden's hold, pulled off his jacket, dumped it on the bench and stormed off angrily, ignoring Hayden's calls and his footsteps trailing hastily behind her. He finally got hold of her but she pushed him away.

"Don't follow me, just let me be", she shouted pleadingly and giving him one last look that made his heart break, she ran off in another direction.

Hayden knew better than to follow her that instant but he just hoped she would be safe wherever she is went since it was late.

He instantly regretted his decisions but there was no going back now. He was even yet to deal with his parents, who had been on his neck to bring home the girl he wanted to get married to.

His mum especially wasn't taking things easy with him and it was because of her, he had refrained from taking Keila home.
