It was no secret ─ everyone had noticed that his demeanour had changed into a moodier one for no apparent reason. He had quit football, took up smoking and refused to apply for a job with Jeremiah and Steven. And instead of attempting to understand, others judged or left him to brood alone.

So when Rosie Franklin stood beside him, he couldn't help but narrow his eyes as he glanced upwards.

"I didn't know you smoked," she muttered, stating strongly with no hint of bias.

As if by response, Conrad exhaled a puff of smoke, glancing away and staring at the ripples in the water. "If you came here to judge or to ask me to quit, I'd rather you didn't."

His assumption made her smile before she took a seat next to him, dipping her toes into the cold water from the pool. She allowed silence to reign over them for a few minutes before reaching out her hand. "Aren't you going to share with your guest?"

Immediately Conrad shook his head, dark eyebrows furrowed as a strand of dark hair hung above his eyes. "I'm not going to be the reason why you start smoking."

A burst of soft, raspy laughter escaped Rosie's lips. "No offence, Connie,  but I've got plenty of other reasons to start smoking." he looked away, slightly embarrassed as she sighed. "I've been smoking for about a year. Helps with the nerves."

Conrad didn't need to ask ─ her father's death loomed over the house, its effects presiding in his eldest daughter. He dreaded to feel what she felt, but he knew one day he would. Sooner than anyone would think. Instead of prodding, he pulled his case of cigarettes and offered her one. Rosie smiled, the corner of her lips not quite reaching her eyes as she used Conrad's lighter.
