Instead of his usual flirty banter with teenagers who came by to swim, his blue eyes were slightly out of focus as he drummed his fingers against the edge of the pool. Which is why he didn't notice how Steven sneaked upon him, screaming in his ear and making him jump.

Steven laughed, leaning back as he pulled off his hairnet. "Man, your face! What got you so distracted?"

Jeremiah shook his head, pushing the thought of Rosie to the back of his head. "Nothing. I was just thinking."

"Wow, isn't that your first time? How does it feel?" Steven mocked him, causing Jeremiah to push him slightly.

"Hilarious. Truly." Jeremiah drawled sarcastically, following Steven's gaze. "Shayla, really? I mean she's cute, there's no denying that, but don't let her suck you in."

Steven's eyebrows shot upwards as he turned towards his friend unconvinced. "Sucked in?"

"I mean she's already convinced you to go with her to the deb." Jeremiah shook his head, as if he couldn't quite believe that Steven had accepted so easily. "You must really like her."

A scoff escaped his lips, as Steven crossed his arms over his chest. "As if you wouldn't say yes to the deb ball if a certain girl came along."

"What's that supposed to mean?" Jeremiah challenged, amused grin on his fair features.

"Look, I've noticed the way you've started to look at Rosie." when Jeremiah went to protest, Steven added hastily. "It's different, like you're curious. You've never been before."

Jeremiah considered denying this. Denying that anything had changed. He was particularly good at that, at pretending. But if he could confide in anyone, it was Steven. It always had been. So he shrugged, not denying what he had stated. "I don't know. This summer feels different."
