And this year, it seemed to be even more special, as it was her sixteenth. Rosie could remember her sixteenth ─ back when her father was still around. Now she was seventeen, and he would never see her grow up.

But Rosie refused to allow the memories drown her, and Belly's birthday was a perfect way to distract her from it. Waking up earlier than usual, she dug herself into making the cake she made every year and making the last touches to her birthday present.

Little by little she was joined by the rest of the family ─ Laurel made her Mickey Mouse pancakes while Susannah helped, Conrad poured himself some cereal and Steven and Jeremiah fooled around in the kitchen.

It was no surprise the commotion soon awoke Belly, who bounded inside the kitchen with a bright grin. "Good morning!"

"Happy birthday!" Susannah immediately hugged her lightly, and Rosie put down her wooden spoon to quickly congratulate her younger friend.

"Do I smell your iconic lemon cake?" Belly gaped excitedly, giving a small dance when Rosie nodded. "Thank you, thank you, thank you!"

"Now, before we have some cake," Laurel interrupted, guiding Belly towards the living room. "Shall we open gifts? Start with mine."

Little by little, Belly went opening everyone's gifts ─ a poetry book from her mom, pearl necklace from Susannah, a college sweater from Steven, a charm for her bracelet from Jeremiah, a summer perfume from Savannah and a new pair of converse from James.

When it was Conrad's turn, he shuffled uncomfortably in his seat, avoiding Belly's turn. "Sorry, I forgot."

A flash of disappointment crossed Belly's face as her smile slightly faltered, before she attempted a shrug. "It's fine, I wasn't expecting anything anyway."
