Chapter 23: The truth

Levi's POV

A whole year has gone by since the whole "incident" happened. And it's been a year since I had broken up with Hange. Last year, I planned on telling Hange the truth once everything was solved, but I was advised not to, not yet. I valued her safety, even if that meant she'd hate me for it.

Last month was my chance to tell her, unfortunately, she cut me off. It seemed that I first had to let her cool off for a bit before I told her.

And now was my chance.

Samantha and my mother were talking about my mother's recent gemstone she had brought.

With my full honesty.. I wasn't listening. My eyes only stayed glued to a certain brunette sitting quietly in a corner.

"With that all settled, are we done for today?" Mother asked.

"Yes, thank you for today, Mrs. Ackerman. I'll see you out." Samantha says.

"Oh no need to thank me, I should be the one thanking you, but you're welcome."

They both shared a smile. With that all done, Mariam, mother and Samantha left the room, leaving me alone with Hange.

She had been reading a book this whole entire time. I guess she realized that the room had gone quiet. She looked around to see that only I was there.

"They left?" She says, pausing to scan the room once again. "Why are you still here?- actually, never mind that." She says, standing up from her seat as she walked towards the door. I blocked her, preventing her from leaving.

She gave me confused yet scared expression. "What-"

I cut her off. "I just want to talk to you."

"If it's about business matters then talk away. But if it's about what happened last year then there's nothing to talk about" she says, giving me a piercing gaze.

"Just let me explain. Stop trying to avoid this conversation."

She sighs. "Sam will sure be back, let's.. Let's talk somewhere else."

"Alright."

She led me to her office on the floor above Samantha's office. She sat on her desk and gestured me to sit down as well.

"Well, what do you want to tell me?" She asked.

"It's about last year... How.. I ended things between us. I know you probably wouldn't believe me. But the things I said back then was far from the truth."

She looked at me with a confused expression. "What? So you're saying you played with my feelings twice?"

"I didn't mean to. A week before I left, I got a phone call from one of my friends. He said one of my aunts on my fathers side has been assassinated. Even though no one knows who had asked for her to be killed, my uncle already guessed that it was my fathers greatest businesses rival." I paused to cath a breath.

"The private investigator my parents hired said that the person who had asked to killed my aunt was also the reason why Mikasa's parents got into a accident. That greedy man was targeting numerous people from my clan." I say, looking at her caramel eyes.

"I'm sorry to hear that... But what does that have in connection with me? You said he has only targeted your relatives." She says looking even more confused.

"He also attempted to kidnap one of my close friends as well as trying to blackmail my assistant to get her to speak about my company, in hopes of destroying it. And.. I know sooner or later he'd find you and make you his next target. I know.. We could've just hidden our relationship so things between us wouldn't have to come to this, but he would still find out some way or another. I prioritize your safety, Hange. Even if it means you'd hate me."

She looked stunned. Almost speechless. "So.. What you said back then... Was a lie..? When you said you didn't love me?"

"It is. I did love you. I still do." Those last two words just slipped out of my mouth. I didn't intend on saying that. But.. That managed to stun her.

AN: This author's note isn't really an announcement or whatever. Skip this if u wanna.

This chapter isn't a time skip after they met again, if some of you are confused. The "incident" Levi referred to was the assassination attempts etc. Just to make it clear since I'm horrible at translating my plot ideas to words.

I just realized I make it as A/N rather than AN.. Yeah please excuse my stupidity 😻

This story might end at around chap 30 or 40 smth. But who knows, I might ✨magically✨ get motivation and make this go on for longer.
