Thinking about my attitude that night, I realized that my reaction was a bit over the top. I felt ashamed that I so heartlessly sent Ukai home without any explanation.
I didn't show up at Ukai's store or go to watch the volleyball practices for a few days because I could look at Ukai after that embarrassing night. I didn't stop by at the store in the morning to exchange few words with Ukai like I got used to doing and after work I would go straight home.
It was another long day of work finished and I was packing my stuff to leave. The last check that I turned off every appliance and shut the windows and I could pick up my bag and lock the office.
I was standing frozen looking out the window, my hand on the handle pulling it tighter to close when someone knocked on the office door. I jumped a bit startled and then I swiftly called out 'come in'.
"Hinata? Don't tell me you're injured again." I sighed out when the boy showed up in the doorframe.
"No, I was sent here to tell you something." He announced. I observed him with a raised eyebrow, waiting for him to continue.
"And that is?" I encouraged him to spit it out.
"Coach Ukai wants to see you...after the practice...privately." Words were slowly falling out of Hinata's mouth but before I could comprehend what he said, I heard a slap sound which was followed by a groan from Hinata.
"He didn't say that dumbass." Tsukishima hissed as he stepped into the frame.
"You're here as well?" I asked, confused that specifically the two of them would go willingly together.
From what I observed watching their practices, Hinata and Tsukishima weren't the best of friends and would constantly bicker.
"Coach initially wanted to send Hinata alone but seeing how incapable he IS..." Tsukishima stressed the word, smirking at his shorter teammate who in return squinted his eyes back at him. "...he told me to go with him."
My gaze was switching from one boy to the other, noticing how they were both on the verge of yet another bickering competition.
"So what did Ukai actually said?" I asked averting my gaze to Tsukishima this time.
He sighed annoyed.
"He just wants to talk after practice is over. This shrimp just made it sound weird." Aaand he had to end it with another remark to spite Hinata.
Poor Hinata. He already has to deal with everybody making fun of his height and now this. Though he seems to be happy and cheerful all the time so maybe it doesn't bother him that much.
"Huh?! No, I didn't!" Hinata defended himself.
"No? And why was miss L/N so flustered then when you said that?" Tsukishima's hand shot towards me, pointing between my eyes.
I froze and my eyes went wide when their bickering turned to me. Did he notice how taken aback I was?
It was true, I was a bit flustered, picturing Ukai saying that we wanted to see me 'privately' was unordinary for him but I calmed down when Tsukishima said otherwise.
Hinata looked at me with an apologetic expression.
"I did?" He asked.
Tsukishima stood behind him with a winning expression and Hinata looked like a lost puppy, his eyes wide and glossy.
"No, of course not. Don't worry about me." I reassured him with a smile.
"See?" Hinata smirked at Tsukishima who only scoffed and walked out of the office. After saying goodbye Hinata quickly followed after him.
I looked at my watch and saw that they had five minutes until the end of practice. I'd be just in time when I take my things and walk to the gym hall.
When I was almost at the gym, I noticed that the lights were turned off already. I checked my watch again. No, it wasn't that late yet.
My step slowed down and was more wary as I neared the gym. When I grabbed the handle, the door was still open so someone must be still inside.
I slowly opened the door, standing halfway in the doorframe, and called out into the darkness.
"Hello?" My ears attentively listened to any sound they could pick up.
"Y/N?"
Once again I got startled, however, this time my body didn't only jump up a bit but my legs gave up in the process as well I fell down.
"Ow, damn it." I groaned as I held my scrapped knee that made contact with the cement steps that led into the gym.
Immediately, I heard quick steps coming toward me.
It was Ukai who was walking towards the gym on the outside pathway.
"Are you alright?" Ukai crouched down to look at the wound.
"Yes, I'm okay." I sighed out, wiping the dirt from my clothes.
"Why are you here, I said to meet me in front of the school." He said confused while he reached towards the door to lock it.
"Huh? That information didn't get to me. The boys just said to meet you after practice." I said a bit annoyed because of this confusion I scrapped myself.
Ukai pinched his nose bridge and sighed.
"And I thought sending Tsukishima would help." He sighed out in disappointment but I could see the small smile that tugged at the corners of his mouth.
"Well what is done is done, you're here and I am here. Come on, I'll disinfect that knee at my store." He suddenly happily announced and started walking away.
Noticing that I wasn't by his side, he stopped and turned around.
"Y/N, let's go."
