' Flashback'
Mapleshade was watching her kits play with Frostfall's litter. At least Frostfall and her kits aren't judging us due to our ThunderClan origin .
Her thoughts were interrupted by a hiss coming from her right side.
" What is your Dark Forest spawn doing with the deputy's kits?" A young warrior named Dawnfang hissed at her.
" They are just playing. Nothing more. And her kits were half-RiverClan, to begin with. Now they will grow up into loyal RiverClan warriors. " Frostfall scolded the cream and white she-cat.
Dawnfang scoffed. " Loyal? Those kits don't even know what that word means!" She hissed.
" Are you mewing about my kits or Mapleshade's?" Frostfall asked.
" Hers, of course. Your kits are the offspring of the two most loyal cats RiverClan has ever known. " Dawnfang replied.
Frostfall eyed the cream and white warrior, not mewing a word before walking over to Mapleshade.
" Don't listen to them. They haven't gotten used to your kits yet but they will soon. " The white queen mewed.
Mapleshade nodded.
" I know that. " She told Frostfall, continuing to watch the kits play around the camp.
Later that day when Mapleshade was eating a minnow she noticed Appledusk padding to her, followed by his apprentice, Perchpaw.
The pale brown tom looked at her with contempt in his green gaze.
" I don't understand why Darkstar would make the mistake of taking you and your kits to our Clan. " He told the tortoiseshell queen.
" What are you mewing about?! They are your kits, too" Mapleshade protested.
" Those poor scraps of fur aren't mine. They will never be. Do you understand me? " Appledusk hissed at her.
" Reedshine is the only queen with my kits. They will not be kin of any kind to your kits. " The tom continued.
Mapleshade stared at him with wide eyes. She couldn't find her voice. Does this mean that... Do I have to raise my kits alone? Why would Appledusk be so cruel to me?
Unbeknownst to the pair, their conversation was witnessed by someone. One of the warriors, a dark brown and white tabby tom named Birchfoot. Why Appledusk would first claim that her kits are his and the next time he has a conversation with her tells her the opposite? Doesn't he understand that Mapleshade has no support in RiverClan, mostly because of his actions?
Birchfoot emerged from the warriors den, padding over to the distraught queen.
" I heard what Appledusk told you. I can help you with your kits if you want me to. " He told her.
