❛ you know i adore you, i'm crazier for you
than i was at 16, lost in a film scene ❜that morning everyone woke up earlier in order to prepare for belly's birthday breakfast. it was sort of a tradition. every year, laurel would make her daughter a batch of mickey mouse pancakes and everyone would sit at the table, and then belly would open the presents.
however this year was different, the girl had decided to skip the breakfast and immediately jump into opening presents. she sat on the couch while everyone else found spots around, all expectedly looking at her hoping that she'd like their gift.
belly tore the gift wrapping off of the first present. she tossed it to the side and turned the book to look at the title, "it's a first edition," laurel spoke up, the present was from her, "i got it from a rare book dealer." laurel was smiling broadly at her daughter. the girl nodded her head, "thanks, mom." the mother shook her head in disbelief, "turn to the bookmarked page," she glanced at susannah who was next to her, "it's your favourite poem."
"oh, yeah," belly smiled opening the book of the collection of poems by e. e. cummings, "i remember susannah teaching us to recite this. 'for whatever we lose," belly began reciting, then everyone joined in, "like a you or a me. it's always ourselves we find in the sea."
belly chuckled, closing the book. "thank you," her words were much more sincere this time, "i love it." laurel nodded her head in satisfaction, a smile on her face, "you're welcome."
"okay, open mine now, belly," susannah handed the girl a small box. belly smiled, shaking the box next to her ear to see if she could guess what was inside. once again she tore the wrapping paper only this time to reveal a small velvet box, "oh, wow;" the girl was in awe at the pearls in the box, "they're gorgeous. thank you, susannah." everyone else peered a little to see what was in the box.
susannah moved to the couch that belly was sitting on, "my mom gave me these pearls for my sweet sixteen," she pulled them out of the box and put them around her neck, "radiant, isn't she?" the blonde then returned to her spot next to laurel, "they look great on you, sweetheart."
jeremiah got ready to give her his present but was beaten to it by piper, "this one is from me, well more so from my mom but... yeah." she handed the younger girl the velvet box. again, the boys peered closer to look inside as belly opened it. it was a beautiful headpiece, more like a tiara if you asked belly. "it's- i- i don't know what to say," the girl was at a loss of words.
piper gave a tight-lipped smile, "she wore that the year she applied for the deb ball and because sadie and i aren't going, i thought you should have it." oh, just how much emotion did that headpiece hold none of them was aware. they tried to hide it but if you looked closely enough you could see some tears prickle in both susannah and laurel's eyes. belly thanked the girl, not once but a few times actually.
"oh, i'm next. i'm next," jeremiah jumped up from his seat. belly opened the box and there was a key charm, "it's a good-luck charm to help you pass your driving test." belly laughed and immediately put it on her bracelet, shaking it to show it off, "perfect. thank you."
"this one is from me," sadie spoke up giving the girl the box. belly untied the ribbon and then tore the wrapping paper. opening the box she was greeted by the anklet sadie bought just the night before. the younger girl chuckled, taking the piece of jewellery out of the box, "it's- really pretty. i love it, sades. thank you."
she giggled to herself and bent down to put it on her ankle. "think fast, belly!" steven threw his gift at her. "what?" she caught it at the last second. a few chuckled but the action was ultimately scolded by laurel. belly opened the present, inside was a grey princeton sweatshirt. "wow, steven, i can't believe you actually spent money on me," belly joked, admiring the piece of clothing. steven scoffed in a joking manner, "relax. i just didn't want you stealing mine next year when i get in."
"i didn't know you were still considering princeton," laurel turned to her son. steven stammered, unsure, "you know, i-i think i'm gonna apply for some scholarships, and dad thinks i can get some financial aid. i-i don't know. i'll see if i get in." laurel wanted to continue the conversation but was cut off by susannah., "conrad, uh, do you want to give belly your present?"
conrad, who had been fidgeting the entire time spoke, a guilty look on his face, "sorry, i forgot." the tension in the room that wasn't there before became thicker. belly's smile fell but she quickly recovered, this time a fake one on her face, "uh, that's... that's cool. um... i wasn't really expecting anything anyway, so..."
he wished her a happy birthday again and left, giving an excuse. the weird behaviour hadn't gone unmissed by anybody as they shared confused glances. what the hell was going on with that boy?
