'Quiet, prisoners!' says a figure who stands with her back to me.

Three other figures are tied to a tree, squirming around like worms. They'd been gagged by some sort of dirty cloth, probably a sock. Just the sight of it is enough to make me gag too.

'Finally, I shall be the one to kill Perseus Jackson. I will be crowned queen of the universe, and everyone shall know my name!' the crazy lady shrieks, drawing a long, bronze blade.

I put my fist in my mouth to stop myself from screaming.

I need to help them!

They're in danger!

The woman holds the blade up, which looks ridiculous, as the sword is almost as tall as her. In other words, the woman seems pretty short, probably even shorter than me. I guess you can describe her as short but deadly, if that even makes sense.

'Now, which one of you shall I kill first?' the nuts woman goes on, pointing the sword at each of her captives' throats.

I have mere seconds. Looking around, the closest thing I can reach is a rock. Then, suddenly I have an idea. I take my fist out of my mouth.

No. There's no way it would work, my brain protests.

But, heck, I could at least try, I think, reaching out.

Silently grabbing the rock, I aim at the lady's bob of slowly greying brown hair. Taking a deep breath, I forcefully thrust the rock, and watch as it sails through the air.

My aim's good today.

She shrieks before falling back, her head hitting the floor with a thump. Hastily, I jump over the unconscious body and begin to untie the ropes that bind the three to the tree. (Hey, that rhymes!)

There are two boys and one girl. The one in the middle, who's the "Perseus" boy, looks at me in an expression that shows both pleasure yet confusion. I pick up the sword, just in case they try to attack me.

'Lily Rachel Mabiasan. A pleasure to meet you. Thanks for, well, saving our lives back there,' says a female voice.

The girl stands up. She has curly blonde hair tied up in a high ponytail, and steely grey eyes. I can already tell she's not a girl to be messed with. She seems about sixteen or seventeen, and so do the others.

'This is, as you can tell, Percy. And he's Grover. I'm Annabeth Chase, daughter of Athena,' she says with an American accent. 'You can put the sword down.'

Huh, I think. Wait, how does she know my name?

'Athena? Isn't she a god from Greek mythology?' I study her expression. 'And how the heck do you know my name?' I begin to make my tone mature, as if I'm older than I actually am. I still grip the sword, my knuckles growing white. It's a very heavy sword.

'Okay, number one, Greek mythology is real,' Annabeth shrugs.

I give her a funny look. Greek mythology? Real? Those are three words that sound wrong together. But she doesn't look like she's lying.

'And number two, we know your name because we're here to get you and bring you to our camp.'

Again, I'm sceptical. I look at the other two boys. There's a boy next to Percy. What was his name again . . . Grover?

He has brown hair and eyes, similar to George. He feeds something that looks like a cracker to Percy, and he immediately looks better. Grover notices where I'm looking and offers me one.

'No, I shouldn't,' I shake my head, wondering what kind of poison was in there. I'd learned to never trust strangers.

Percy chuckles. 'It's not like we're gonna kill you or something,' he gives me a side-smile. Hesitantly, I give a fake laugh and nod. He must've seen my nervous expression, as his eyes turn serious.
