It was the first time that Tori noticed the whispers as she walked down the halls with Shinso. People would stare oddly at her friend, almost...in fear?
Shinso had hoped she would just never notice it, since she was usually too busy talking anyways. But this morning Tori was tired from the extra training she had been doing, seeing as the UA Sports Festival was coming up. So the lack of sleep and the overworked body led to her being quiet.
"Hey, Hitoshi?" Tori asked, gently tugging on his sleeve. She had taken to calling him that since the night he got her snacks and they watched movies together.
"What's up?" He asked, tired himself.
"Why are people looking at us like that? Do we really look that tired?" She tried to make it a joke, to mask her concern and prevent her friend from getting embarrassed.
Shinso looked her over once. "You look fine."
Tori blushed slightly, looking away. "I mean seriously, do they have a problem or something? Because I will totally kick someone's ass."
"No, Tori- ugh... they're looking at me. It has nothing to do with you." Shinso said, a bit more harshly than he meant to.
But it didn't phase Tori. "Uh, all the more reason to beat them up. No one gets to pick on my friends. Why would they even do that? You didn't do anything wrong."
Yes I did. I was born with this quirk. Shinso thought. And the thoughts continued to creep in, flooding his mind with insecurities and worry. What if someone told Tori about his quirk? She would stop being his friend for sure, just like everyone else. Fear him, just like everyone else.
She would find out eventually, and Shinso didn't wanna be left.
So he would just have to leave first.
"You know, maybe it's because of how loud you're being, you draw so much attention it's giving me a headache." He said, his tone sharp like the bite of a viper.
"W-what?" Tori asked, the smile on her face dropping.
"Or maybe it's because they're disgusted by the fact that you're hanging out with a 1c member out of pity." He kept going, stabbing himself with every word.
"Hitoshi, what are you talking about?" Tori had stopped walking, as had Shinso. Her hands gripping her loose sleeves.
"I'm just sick of you." He said, making his voice sound as monotone as possible. He had to do this, had to hurt her so she would leave without him having to use his quirk.
She would have left anyways.
At the small, choked back sob, Shinso was snapped out of his thoughts, he looked down at Tori, who was trying her hardest to hold back the tears but a few had managed to run down her face, and she was visibly shaking.
"I..." she started, but instead put her head down, dashing away from Shinso.
"I'm sorry, Tori."
