Double dates are fun, well seem fun in theory. Thankfully, it wasn't something you and Rodrick really had to think about. Because to go on a double date, you need to be in a relationship. That, or have your friend set you up with someone.

And that's what the two of you thought Chris and Ben were doing when they invited you to play mini golf. Of course, they didn't say it was a double or, well, triple date. They said it was a hangout, but now you knew when a boy said that he was probably lying.

"This is so unfair." You complain, taking a seat on one of the fake rocks. "How do we even track our scores?"

"There's no point in tracking if we're not scoring."

Rodrick sighs and leans against the same rock. The two of you watch the boys with their dates. Both making the same expression, a mixture of disgust and annoyance. All day, you and Rodrick would have to watch them flirt and be all over each other. Not only was it gross, but it was a reminder to you and Rodrick that neither of you had someone to be that way with.

*except maybe each other,* Rodrick thought, lips curling into a mischievous smile.

"What?" You ask, noticing the change in his face.

He doesn't say anything and takes a seat beside you on the rock. There's a lack of space, so you stand up and let Rodrick have the seat. But before you can fully stand, his hands are on your hips. He pulls your body towards his and sits you on his knee.

Caught off guard, a small sound leaves you, but you stay on his leg. There's no need to ease your body into his, you relax immediately and lay your back to his chest. You smile as you feel Rodrick's arms wrap around you and pull you closer. He hums and brings his lips to your ear.

"Wanna have some fun?" He whispers, and you try your best not to squirm.

"Define fun."

"Let's ruin their date."

He paused waiting for you to disagree, but to his surprise you seem intrigued.

"How?" You ask him in a small, curious voice.

"If you were on a date with like another couple, what would ruin it for you ?"

"Hmm." You thought for a moment. "Probably if the other couple was-"

"Out doing you and your date."

He finishes your sentence, and suddenly the two of you are thinking the same thing. Competition. If Chris and Ben wanted you and Rodrick to play the role of the third couple. The two of you would be the best couple.

"I don't know, that seems kinda mean."

"Yeah, but on the other hand, it'll show us if they're serious about each other. Competition makes people go crazy."

"Like you." You whisper to yourself, but you wanted Rodrick to hear.

His arms squeeze you tight.

"I heard that."

Pretending to be a couple was easy, and pretending to be a cringy super in love couple was fun.

"Beat that." Ben says, gloating about the fact that it took him only three shots to get the ball in the hole.

You roll your eyes and plan to carelessly hit the ball, but Rodrick grabs your club and stops you.

"Come on y/n we can't let 'em win that easy."

He gives you back the club, and you position yourself to hit the ball. But your stance must have not reached Rodrick's standards of prime ball hitting. So he gets behind and decides to help you fix it. He puts his hand over yours, and you hold the club together.

"Bend your legs."

You hid your smile and do as he says, bending your legs slightly. Both of your arms pulls back and in a swift move and hit the ball. It quickly moves across the fake grass, but misses the small hole in the ground. Rodrick keeps himself behind you and his hand over yours like this you both awkwardly waddle to where the ball landed. You both laugh at the thought of how odd this looked to the others. The two of you hit the ball again and make it into the hole. You celebrate with a high five.

"Beat that." You tell not just Ben, but all of them.

He glares at the both of you for a second before the group moves to the next hole. Time flew by and by the end of the day you and Rodrick felt and knew that you'd won over the others. Not just in mini golf, but as a couple.

The walk to Rodrick's car for you and him is filled with pride. You press him to the side of the van and place your hands on his shoulders. His arms wrap around you, and suddenly the free space between the two of you is gone.

"Ya know, we make a really good team."

"Team?" He questions.

Couple, you meant couple. He knew you meant a couple.

"I think you mean we make a good couple." He whispered, bringing his head down to yours before pulling back.

Your skin burns and you smile, Rodrick does the same. His cheeks glow with pink, and it seems there's something in his eyes, something in the way they look into yours. It's faint and small, but doesn't surprise you. It doesn't seem new, it's almost like it's always been there. It had been a while since you and Rodrick were like this with each other. Not just right now, but all day being playful and teasing each other. You really missed being like this with him, and it was obvious he missed it too.

"Uh, if we were actually dating and just spent the day absolutely destroying our friends in mini golf. How would we celebrate our win and show off to them what a good couple we are at the same time?"

The two of you are thinking the same thing again. You give him his answer not with your voice, but with your lips. The kiss is slow and soft, but still it sets your skin on fire. The familiar feels of Rodrick holding you so close that his body heat is yours. That every small noise that leaves you is met by one that leaves him. To the others watching from afar it's a small action, sure, but to you and him in this moment it's the biggest feeling you've ever felt, ever known. It's just there, it always will be and maybe just maybe it always has.
