"What a great way to waste a Saturday." Rodrick complains walking into the roller rink.
It was some kid's birthday party. You didn't know the kid and neither did Rodrick, but apparently they were a mutual friend of Greg and your brother. Or was forced to invite their entire class. And with your parents having lunch together, you and Rodrick had to be there because they weren't.
"Roller skating is actually fun, and we get cake."
"It's only fun when you know how to and the cake looks like shit."
"Wait, you don't know how to skate?" You say in complete shock.
"I never said that." His response is quick.
You stop both of you from walking any further. You thought back to all the times you and Rodrick had been in the roller rink, and you realized all those times he never skated. He ate pizza or played games or complained, but never actually skated.
"I've never seen you skate before."
"That doesn't mean I don't know how, I probably do it better than you." He tells you, beaming with overconfidence.
"Really."
"Yea really." He doubles down.
"Okay, fine, let's find out."
You grab his hand and quickly walked to get your shoes. You tell the employee both of your sizes, and you hurry to get to the rink, but of course Rodrick slows you down. He takes his time, complaining that his shoes were too tight and even the wrong size. Calling his bluff, you offer to get him a bigger size, but he declines.
"I don't know y/n there's way too many kids out there."
"What, are you worried about being outdone by them and me?"
You tell him with a smug smile as you stepped onto the rink floor. Rodrick huffs and rolls his eyes, but takes no steps. The smugness takes over your face as you move your feet, shift your weight and skate effortlessly.
Rodrick watches you from his spot, his expression blank and unconcerned. At least it was for half a second but watching you its gone almost immediately. Replaced with the soft curve of his plump pink lips into a smile. He almost forgets that this was supposed to be a competition, by how content he was just sitting there watching you have fun.
With Rodrick's attention all on you, you figured why not show off a bit. You sped up gradually, picking up a faster pace as you move. Flying past the struggling skaters and pointing to Rodrick as you do. Mouthing "That's you" and "You suck". But quickly your cockiness gets the best of you and blinds you from seeing the random toddler carelessly running across the rink.
You heard Rodrick yell your name before you heard him fall, and before you heard the toddler who you just ran into burst into tears. A crowd of people formed immediately when they heard the noise. They watch as the small child is snatched up by their mother, still crying.
"Holy shit, are you okay ?" Rodrick asks you in a panic.
"That's what you get for tryna show off." Your brother comments standing there being unhelpful.
"Where the fuck did that kid come from ?" You say, slowly sitting up, a hard pounding vibrating against the back of your head.
"Stupid ass baby was running after some ball."
Rodrick helps you get up, carefully wrapping one of his arms around your waist as he helps you move off the rink. He walks surprisingly easily with skates on, that's what you thought until you looked down and saw his shoes were gone. Rodrick was walking in his socks. He'd kick off his roller skates after he ran onto the rink and ate shit after you fell.
"How's your head ?" Rodrick asks, pressing the small plastic bag of ice to the back of your head. Gently, very gently. Trying purposefully to not apply too much pressure. For some reason, he was so concerned about you even more than your own brother.
"It's fine I guess, but a real ice pack would help a lot more." You try to sound comical, but you're still somewhat serious.
Rodrick picked up on it and smiled. And for a moment the banging in the back of your head stops, and you're overcome with a sense of comfort instead, and your lips curve into a smile that matches his. It's a small, simple moment, sure, but something happens to Rodrick that neither of you realize. It's almost like he sees something that was never there before.
"I just clocked in, and you made me look for a some goddam ice pack of fifteen minutes and guess what we don't have any." The teenaged employee said to another behind the door before walking into the room.
"Sorry, but we're- Hey, it's you." The boy says, a voice you recognized.
Your eyes leave Rodrick and meet his instead, and you did recognize him.
"Oh hi, uh, I didn't know you worked here."
"Yea, I only work weekends though, and I'm pretty sure I'm gonna quit after this one or ya know, get fired."
You chuckle, although you weren't really sure if it was a joke.
"So no Ice packs, huh." Rodrick says, besides you. "Like at all."
"Nope."
An awkward silence and even a bit of tension hangs in the air, and you aren't sure why. It mostly comes from the way the boys are looking at each other, well look was the wrong word, it was more like an intense stare. You eventually break the silence and start a conversation, but Rodrick doesn't seem too interested in talking.
But he continues to stare as the two of you do. It's not a small thing, and the only reason you don't notice it is because you weren't thinking the way he was. Or at least the way Rodrick thought he was thinking. He sees something he always knew was there, and he hates it.
"I was gonna ask you this later today, but I was wondering if you wanted to come to this sorta party I'm throwing."
You don't give yourself a moment to think before the word "Yes" fly's out of your moth.
"We'd love to." You tell him with a smile.
"We?" He questions.
"Yea, me and Rodrick and probably Ben and Chris too."
"Oh." he paused. "Okay, I'll send you my address, and I'll see you then." He paused again and swallow as his eyes shifted to Rodrick. "You and him."
