"TURN HERE," Max instructed, pointing at the window.

"Here?" Dustin asked, looking at where she pointed.

Max nodded, resting her head back on the window. Steve hesitantly turned, driving past a sign that read 'Roane Hill Cemetery'. As they got closer to the unsettling hills, Y/N instantly thought of her last time there. The painful gathering where all the attendees were dressed in black. The car came to a screeching halt as Max snatched the last letter from her bag. She pushed the car door open and climbed out. Y/N unbuckled her seat belt, following promptly.

"Max?" Y/N called out, trying to catch up to her girlfriend.

"Y/N, please, just wait in the car." Max responded continuing on the path, passing old and broken headstones.

"Max, just wait." Y/N pleaded, finally catching up with her. She grabbed Max's arm and spun her so their eyes could meet. Before Max could protest, Y/N jumped into her statement she was too nervous to say earlier.  "Just listen to me. I know something happened there with your mother. Was it Vecna?"

"I told you, I'm fine. Okay? I mean, as fine as someone who's hurtling towards a gruesome death can be." Max responded. The usual snarky comments she made felt too surreal at the moment. She couldn't bring herself to keep eye contact, causing her to rip her eyes away from Y/N's increasingly worried face.

"Max, you know you can tell me anything."

"Yeah, I know that." Max nodded, brushing her hair behind her ears. (and not in a debby ryan way 😔)

"Why won't you tell me what's happening? I know for certain that you are not fine." Y/N paused pulling out the folded letter she moved to her back pocket. "I get why they would need a letter, they don't understand you like I do. But I don't need a letter. I'm here for you okay? I'm here."

"I know N/N. Please wait in the car, this won't be long." With a quick peck on Y/N's cheek, she continued to walk deeper into the cemetery.

As Y/N stood there watching Max the pit in her stomach grew. Though she didn't want to admit it, standing there wouldn't help keep Max safe. She couldn't bring herself to return to the car just yet, so she turned away from the car. She made her way past the hedges and looked for her parent's graves. Afraid of missing anything, she made it a point to keep the visit short. Even though it had been a while since Y/N had been there, she stumbled upon it quite quickly. As she kneeled down on the grass, she noticed the neglect of the gravestone. Y/N should've been upset at the moss growing around the edges, she knew there was no one left in Hawkins that would've cared. She quickly brushed it off and sat in silence, gazing at the words inscribed in the stone.

Max took no time finding the headstone she was looking for. The routine trips she took gave her the gift of memorization of the rows and columns in the field. She sat down and crossed her legs, taking in the smell of the fresh flowers planted near the gravestone. She slipped the page out of the envelope and unfolded the loose leaf. Taking a shaky breath, she began reading the letter out loud;
