I didn't want my last memories to hold shame - to forever be etched in my mind with my screams having shared my cowardice, my failure to save the girl I clung to because when it came to it, I was a coward.

Time had slowed.

Corin's grip was fierce - both our frames paralyzed where we thought we could call safe. Secure.
Her nails dug into my skin as much as mine did to hers.

I didn't want to fade in fear.

Yet time mocked us...

The laugh started off soft, a recollection of mixing emotions that silenced our terror with hushed chortles and grew in tone, the figure waving their hands before the expression broke free.
A hand rested over their abdomen, their free hand on the railing to the stairs and the frame leans back in some attempt to gather back - at least to us - loud guffaws of upbeat feelings.

Our breathing was heavy if not nonexistent, Corin's chest letting go of precious air as her gaze narrowed on the target of her newfound glare and leftover pride.
Her shoulders fall - time finally moving back to a more stable flow that turned on the kitchen light, and we both shrink back in shelter of hiding our eyes.

"G-grandma?!" Corin jabs what was supposed to be an angry rant of frustration...but it came out as more of a relieved, glad to meet your savior kind of tone and a plea that made her voice waver.
Her hands leave my arm and my gaze lingered on the older woman who wiped at her eyes.
"What are you playing at- you scared the life out of us?!" The younger female's scolds wanted to burst into floods of relief at the recovering older woman.

Her throat clears, laugh regaining composure that died down.
"Hush now you two- there's no need for worry." She teases, dusting off the robe that covered her nightgown before she chuckles once more. "All is well."

"Well‐ why would you do that, grams?" Corin breathes life into her question as her hand finds her chest.

"My apologies, dears, I didn't want to."

I swallow - gathering myself with an exhale that left my chest hallow. Nerves were shot, forced to calm.

"You didn't want to do it, but you did anyways?" Corin folds her arms in defiance, earning another chuckle from the woman.

"I may not have wanted to fully, but I find a good scare can keep you on your toes." She explains in a teasing manner and I force a small smile, looking between the two.
"Now, are you going to explain why you're sneaking food from my kitchen, Corin? Shouldn't you know better?" Her scolding tone held an air of playfulness. "You're lucky I don't add on to your chores for tomorrow."

It was the older woman's turn to cross her arms - Corin's tough exterior melting away within moments that left her arms by her side and her lip bitten.

"It was me, Dahlia." I speak up, picking up my left over courage. "She wouldn't have if I hadn't told her to." The older woman's gray-green eyes fall on mine, and her cold expression softens to one of care - Corin nudging my side as if to ask what I was doing.
The older woman then steps forward, brushing off our shoulders with a small, hummed chuckle.

"No need to stand up for her- all in good fun, right?" She smiles, glancing towards the guilty-looking teen by my side. "Just don't eat too much. And don't stay up too much longer either, dears, you have quite the day's journey back to campus tomorrow." Her soft hand pats our shoulders - Corin regaining her confidence as she smiles at the departing older woman.

The light fades at the switch of her hand - her heartfelt goodnight fading up the stairs.

We both stood still - unmoving for a good minute as if needing some time to piece together our fallen composure.
