I watched minzy wearily. She seemed different after this latest encounter. I don't know if its because she's blaming herself for Lay's death or if its something else entirely.
We were all inside the conference room and I was briefing Congressman Lee on what had happened.
"This just won't do. You aren't coming up with anything. The only thing you have is more bodies and more questions. I thought your team was better than this." He said glaring at me.
I gritted my teeth. He was really grating on my nerves lately. I took a deep breath before I answered trying to control my temper. "Sir with all do respect were trying our best. We've never experienced a case like this before. But we have some leads and were looking at Lay's background."
Congressman Lee huffed and left the room without another word.
"What crawled up his butt?" Dara asked.
I sighed. "I have no clue. Everyone's just frustrated and on edge. I'm sure the president is breathing down his neck for answers."
I sat back in my chair. "Bom.." I started to say when she interrupted me.
"Yeah I know. Look into Lay's background."
I laughed. "You got it."
She stood up and sighed mumbling "There goes my Saturday." As she left the room.
I looked over at Minzy who was still spacing out. I didn't want her doing anything more today. She needed time to relax and get some space from this case. "Minzy you go home." I told her.
She looked at me a little dazed before she shook her head. I expected her to refuse and insist on staying and doing something to help but instead she actually agreed with me.
"Your right. I think I'll just go home." She stood up and left the room. I watched her go puzzled.
"Something's going on with her." Dara said.
I completely agreed.
"What do you think of that Tao guy?" Dara asked me.
I looked over at her and shrugged. "I don't know. Isn't he just hear to appease the top dogs in the presidents security office?"
Dara nodded but didn't seem convinced. "He's not even an official employee of the security office. He was brought in specifically to investigate who hacked in the computers and sent the message signed from rebel. I just find it strange that this outsider is in all the right places. He's even here in our office."
I didn't want to tell Dara that she was grasping at straws because she wanted someone tangible to investigate involving this case.
She continued. "He's even Minzy's neighbor. He's a Chinese national, just like Lay, Kris and the Chinese ambassador. There are just way to many coincides for me to ignore."
Now that she mentioned it, that's was strange. It couldn't hurt for her to look into it more. "Look into Tao's background. See if there is any link between him Lay, and Kris or the Ambassador."
She nodded and left the room also. I was finally alone. I kept thinking about the bruises on Minzy's face and neck. I wondered about how close she came to death and why the assassin didn't kill her. It was clear Minzy was holding something back from us, I just didn't know why.
But I had work to do. I had someone I needed to see and I knew just where he would be.
I stood outside of the high end clothes store that I knew from my investigations that Kris frequented. It was Saturday. He always went shopping on the weekends. I was hoping to 'casually' bump into him.
I needed to find out more about him and his relationship to Lay and the mysterious Luhan who messaged him. Could one of them be rebel, leader, the killer?
I watched the streets and I saw Kris's expensive red car pulling into a parking spot across the street. Bingo I was in luck.
I went inside the store and pretended to browse through the racks of clothes. As I flipped through them I heard the shops door open and close. He was here.
I glanced up and saw him pulling sunglasses off and placing them on the pocket of the jacket he was wearing.
He sauntered over to the back of the store and began browsing. OK this was my chance.
I made my way to the back to casually picking up a fee blouses along the way. Once I was close enough to him I stumbled and fell into his back. He turned quickly and held onto my arm holding me steady.
"You." He said once I stood up fully and looked at him.
"Me." I said smiling at him.
He crossed his arms across his chest and a slow smile spread across his face.
"What a coincidence." He said.
"Yup." I replied."I love shopping here."
"Funny I come here almost every weekend and I've never seen you here."
"Yeah funny." I said boldly keeping my eyes locked with his.
He chuckled. "Hows your investigation going?"
"I'm working on it." I said. He raised an eyebrow not saying anything in that deep voice of his.
He annoyed me. I was praying he had something, anything to with all of this so I could arrest him. He continued to stare at me with that confident superior look, I really wanted to knock it off his face, with my fist.
I took a deep breath reminding myself that I was supposed to be playing nice.
I stepped forward placing a hand on his arm and smiled up at him. "We should go get coffee."
"Should we really?" He asked sounding amused. I squeezed his arm harder involuntarily out of anger. "Yes we should."
He shrugged and said. "Lead the way."
Somehow I didn't think this little interrogation was going to go down the way I planned it.
