Chapter twelve

The next morning, as soon as I woke up, I got ready and put on the white dress. I went downstairs, and Susannah was already there.

"Hey, hon. Here is your breakfast. Eat it, and I'll see you outside when you're ready."

"Okay."

I think I've never eaten my breakfast so slowly before, but I didn't want to spill any food on my dress. About fifteen minutes later, I finished eating, and I went outside, where Susannah was waiting for me. Conrad was there too; he seemed to have just come back from surfing, and I'm not gonna lie, he looked so hot. I tried to completely ignore him when I approached Susannah.

"Hon, are you ready?"

"Yep. Where do I have to be?"

"Sit in that chair," she said, pointing at it, and then she turned to Conrad. "Don't you think Addi looks gorgeous in that dress, Connie?" Since I can remember, Susannah has always told me that I'm destined for one of her boys. I've never believed it. I mean, Jere is my best friend, and I've never seen him differently. And Conrad is Conrad. If some years ago she had told me that I would end up with Conrad, I would have laughed. I had never seen him in that way until maybe three years ago.

"Yeah, always." And after that, he just left without saying anything more. I know I told him to stay away from me, but I don't want that anymore. I want to talk to him like we used to. I prefer having him as a friend than this.

"Okay, let's start. I'm gonna try to be fast, okay?"

"Don't worry. I don't have any other place where I want to be." She smiled and started working. I sat in that chair for about three hours. It was really hot in that dress, and I just wanted to take it off. I loved it, but being in the sun with it could be a complete nightmare.

"Do you have your escort?"

"No, not yet."

"I thought you would ask that guy who came to your birthday."

"Nick?" She nodded. "No, I don't know if I should ask him. He is really nice and cute, and I like him, but he is not the one I want to be my escort."

"Maybe one of my boys is?"

"Susannah, I love you, but I don't want to talk about it."

"Addi, I know Conrad, and trust me when I tell you that he would do whatever for you, including being your escort."

"He hates those things, and I'm not so sure about what you just said. I mean, he is so reserved with what he feels and all that, and I don't want that."

"He has changed a lot this year. I don't know why. Every time I ask him about it, he just changes the topic or ignores me. But Addi, deep down, he is still the sweet boy you've known your entire life." I love how easy it is to talk to her.

"I don't want to end up hurt. That's all."

"I don't think that being apart from each other is the solution."

"How do you know...?"

"Did you guys fall apart?" I nodded, "Just by seeing you, I could figure it out. You two used to hang out a lot, and I think you are one of the few people who really knew Connie. Now, I don't see you two together anymore. You know, the first time I saw Connie smile in months was the day you came here. I don't know what you did to him, but I really think we can bring the old Connie back, and you are the only one who could do that."
