Fourth of July. The only day of summer when fathers are important. Don't get me wrong, fathers are important, but summer is all about mothers and kids. Adam Fisher and my dad used to stay here all summer, but now since my parents are divorced, he is only coming for the fourth with his new girlfriend, and Adam is working or that's what Susannah told us.
Today is going to be a long day.
Jere, Steven, Conrad, and Susannah were already in the kitchen when I arrived. Susannah was cooking everything for today when my mom arrived.
"Good morning, guys," she greeted us.
"Look who's wearing makeup," Susannah teased her.
"Oh no, I just applied some mascara."
"Yeah, sure, and obviously it has nothing to do with John coming."
"I wanted to look presentable for my husband."
"Ex-husband," Steven reminded her.
"Yeah, whatever. What about Adam?"
"Yeah, and Dad? I want to show him the fireworks this year. They are going to be awesome." Jere looked so happy to see his dad. On the other hand, Conrad looked mad. I guess he woke up in a bad mood.
"Sorry, sweetie. Something related to work happened, and he couldn't make it."
"Really?" Now it's like the moods completely changed. Jere looks sad, but Con is smiling. What the hell is wrong with that guy?
"Addi, could you help me prepare the guest room? It's for your dad," Mom told me.
"Is he staying here with his girlfriend?"
"Yeah. Do you have a problem with that?"
"Mom, that room is next to mine. Ugh."
"Just go and prepare it."
"Why me? You could ask Steven or Belly."
"I'm asking you, so go."
"Fine."
In the guest room, trying to change the bed with new blankets.
"Need any help?" Conrad asked me.
"Yes, please. This is so difficult."
"No, it's not. You only have to let me show you." I stepped away from the bed, so he could take my place and show me. Is this how it will be in the future if I ended up with him? I've never imagined a future with any guy, but Con is different. He is...Con. He's always been here, and I hope he will always be. "Adds, are you listening to me?"
"Yeah, yeah, totally," the bed was almost ready when I looked at it again. "Sorry, I didn't help you with that. I was totally lost in my mind."
"What were you thinking about?"
"My dad. And his girlfriend. They're staying here. Isn't that weird?"
"Relax, I don't think they'll have loud sex."
"God, shut up. I wasn't even thinking about that."
"Sorry." We were both laughing. "What's the problem?"
"That he's bringing his bitchy girlfriend here."
"Whoa, hey, what if she's really nice?"
"Or what if--and hear me out--she is a bitch."
