"Please don't tell anyone. I'll lose all my trust in you. And let's keep our relationship on the down low. I don't want anyone making fun of you for being seen with me." Azrael doesn't look at me as he replies.
"I wouldn't care what everyone else thinks about you or us I mean." I say. I sigh. "Can I ask you something without you getting upset?"
"I guess so." He replies still not looking up at me.
"You're not using me to make yourself feel good are you? Everything you said about your feelings for me were they true?"
He finally looks up at me. I see the sadness in his eyes before he even says anything.
"I wouldn't do that. I'm not like that. Why would you question me? Do you not trust me?" He frowns at me.
"I do trust you. I just don't know how to love someone who's not been loved in a long time." I reply and instantly regret it when I see the look on his face. "I didn't mean it like that, I promise." I say quickly.
"Then what did you mean by that?"
"I just want to give you the love you deserve. I want to love you, Azrael. I really do, but I'm going to have to learn to love someone who's been through so much that I could never begin to understand." I smile at him. "I really feel like I love you. I want what's best for you."
"I don't even know what's best for me." He replies and looks down again.
"Right now I think what's best for both of us is to get back inside to class before we get in trouble."
"Right." He replies smiling. His blue eyes light up when he does.

"It's not my place to tell you."
"But he trusted you enough to tell you? That's shocking. I didn't think he trusted anyone." Ava replies later that day as we walk to our lockers when the last class of the day ends.
"He's learning to trust me. And it's not shocking. Anyone is capable of trust if you allow them to be." I reply. I don't see Azrael in the hallway so he must have left already. I sigh to myself.
"Sounds like a soppy love story." Ava laughs.
"Like the ones you watch?" I reply and laugh.
She slaps me playfully. "Hush that's a secret." She replies and we laugh.
A scream makes everyone in the hallway stop talking. Ava and I rush to where it's coming from.
Ryan has Azrael pinned to the wall. He raises his fist and is about to punch Azrael. I run over to block his hit. He stops when I stand between them.
"Get out of the way, Sage. This doesn't concern you."
"No. Leave him alone. He's done nothing wrong! What has be done to you to deserve this?" I yell.
"Exist that's what. Now get out of my way!" Ryan shoves me to the side but I stand in between them again. I hold my arms up to block his hit. He hits my arm hard. He looks at me angrily. "I told you to fucking move, Bitch!"
This sets me off. I shove him to the ground. "I said leave him alone. Watch what you say, Ryan."
The principal comes running down the hallway and sees the three of us. Azrael looks like he's about to cry, Ryan is on the ground and I'm standing over Ryan yelling at him.
"My office now! Azrael you too." He says.
We follow him into his office. "Who started it?"
I look at Ryan but he stays silent.
"I said who started it?" The principal says again.
I look at Ryan again and he still says nothing. I look at Azrael. He has his head down.
"I'm going to ask one more time, who did it? Answer or all of you will be suspended."
Azrael and Ryan exchange looks with each other. Azrael frowns at Ryan.
"I did, Sir." Ryan says. "I started it."
"You're suspended from football for the rest of the season. I'm tired of this fighting between you two. Azrael, you will be having all of your classes in the counselor's office until further notice. And as for you Sage. You're off the hook this time. Just stay out of trouble, okay?"
I nod and walk out of the office. I wait for Azrael to walk out and I follow him down the hall. He stops at his locker and puts his books away. He closes his locker and smiles at me.
"You know it's rude to follow people." He says
"I just wanted to ask if you were okay." I reply.
"I told you I'm not ever okay. Stop asking me if I am. Is that all you needed, 'cus people are staring at us." He looks over my shoulder.
"I don't care who's staring at us. I'm not going to avoid you just because everyone else does." I reply stepping closer to him.
He steps back. "Well I do. I don't want you to get hurt."
"Listen to the freak, Sage." Ryan says as he walks past us.
Azrael take a deep breath and closes his eyes. "You need better friends." He says and walks away.
Well that was a nice conversation.. I walk outside and stop when I see Azrael standing at the curb waiting for his ride. I stare at him for a few moments and take in his appearance. He's tall and thin. His black hair shines in the sunlight. Black. That's all he ever wears. A hoodie in the summer. I'd question why, but I already know why. I smile to myself. Azrael. He's my angel and I have to keep him safe. I have to show him what real love feels like. His ride pulls up and he gets in the car. I watch as the car pulls away before walking to my own car.
