It took a long time for James to recover. Adam visited him every day. Jaiden and Rush came along every now and then as well. Adam and James hadn't told them about the kiss they shared. Part of them was nervous about their reaction and another part just didn't know how to bring up the subject. Yet, every time Adam visited and Jaiden an Rush didn't come with him, he and James would share a kiss and hold hands. After what felt like ages, James finally recovered enough to be send back.
'I kinda preferred being in bed over this.' James muttered as they walked through the muddy trenches, the rain splashing in their faces.
'Be glad you missed the terrible storm we got a couple days ago. The wind almost blew us away.' Rush commented.
'Should we split up? You know Officer Wolfkins doesn't like it when we hang out in groups.' Adam asked.
'Alright, you and James stay here, Rush and I will keep moving forward.' Jaiden replied.
Adam sat down in the mud, taking off his helmet. He looked up into the grey sky before closing his eyes and letting the rain hit his face. He felt how a warm hand took hold of his cold one and he looked down to see James smiling at him.
'It sure has been quite a couple months...' Adam sighed.
'Yeah, I don't even know how long it's been since we were free.' James chuckled.
'Me neither... time... it fades... it has become blurry...'
'If only I had brought my watch.'
The boys chuckled before going silent. It was a comfortable silence. James leaned his head down on Adam's shoulder as they both just enjoyed each other's company.
'Hey, James?'
'Mmm?'
'If we ever get out of here, I'd love to take you out for some ice cream.'
James chuckled.
'What? I'm serious!' Adam asked.
'I know, it's just... the thought of ice cream and dates seems... almost foreign. Like it's from a different world. It doesn't belong where we are here. So the fact that you're thinking about ice cream now...' James replied.
Adam got up and looked at the blonde.
'It's not because we're in a fucked up situation that we can't do anything romantic!' He said.
Adam looked around before running off. He soon came back with a pile of leaves in his hands. He threw it on the ground and ran off again. He returned with a second pile of leaves that he put next to the first one. He ran of one more time and returned with some sticks.
'Sit down, baby boy.' Adam said as he pointed at one of the piles of leaves. The blonde chuckled for a second, but sat down. Adam followed his example, sitting down on the second pile of leaves. He threw the sticks on the ground and pulled out a lighter.
'Nothing more romantic than a couple together by the fire.' He said. Adam tried to light the fire, but the sticks wouldn't catch any flames.
'C'mon...' Adam muttered.
'I think they're too wet to catch fire, Adam. It's raining.' James chuckled.
'Well, alright then. Forget the fire, I'll just hold up the lighter. Think of it as a candle. Nothing is more romantic than candles.' Adam improvised.
'Sure.' James giggled.
'I don't have any romantic meals, but I got some leftover bread from breakfast this morning.' Adam pulled out a tiny bit of bread, taring it in two and giving half to the blond boy.'
'Sorry I can't give you anything more...' Adam muttered apologetically.
'It's perfect.' James whispered before giving the other boy a kiss on the cheek and snuggling against Adam's shoulder.
Adam felt his entire face heat up. He glanced at the blonde, smiling.

As they returned from the trenches Wolfkins was waiting for them in the sleeping hall.
'Alright, listen up! Today you all explored a part of the swamp. Now it has come to my attention that there are some plants and bacteria in that swamp that can make you pretty sick and because we don't want this many people out at once... we'll allow you all to shower.'
The kids gasped and started to whisper.
'Oh, a nice shower would feel so good.' Jaiden said.
'I don't remember the last time I got a shower.' Rush mumbled.
'Probably before we got here.' James replied.
'SILENCE!' Wolfkins called. Immediately all sound dissapeared.
'Form a line! Everyone has 5 minutes in the shower before it's time for the next person. Now follow me.'
Usually the kids were fairly calm, but now everyone was pushing and pulling to get to the the front of the line. Adam, James, Jaiden and Rush just calmly stayed in the back. They rather wait for their turn than dive into the aggressive group of eager kids. Excitement rose as they waited for their turn. They hadn't showered in months and they were all dirty and smelling like sweat. Nobody was judging of the unhygienic state ofcourse. They were all in the same boat. But that didn't mean it wasn't unpleasant. As time passed they were getting closer and closer to their turn. Then it was Jaiden's turn. 5 minutes later it was time for Rush. Adam and James were now the only two left to wait.
'It's too bad we only get 5 minutes, but man, that's gonna be the best 5 minutes in a long time.' James sighed.
'From what I've heard from the kids that already went, the way they time it is, the water only runs for five minutes.' Adam said.
'So?'
'So that means that... so you know how you just said it's too bad we only get 5 minutes? If we shower together, we could double that time.'
James raised an eyebrow.
'Doubling the shower time and spending some time with my boyfriend? Sounds like a plan to me.'
