Okay, one professor being the parent of a student at the school was fine, but Teddy felt like two professors being parents of students at the school was suspicious. Wasn't there a risk of bias, then? And from what she'd heard over lunch today, there was apparently yet another teacher who happened to be the parent of not one but two students. And in a small school like this where each teacher would end up teaching every student, Teddy sincerely doubted that this was legal.
Well, at least the principal isn't related to any students, so he shouldn't be biased towards any of us, right? Teddy thought to herself. As she glanced around at her class, she realized that she seemed to not be the only one doubting the integrity of teachers who were the parents of students. However, nobody dared to actually bring up those concerns.
Especially not since the younger Regenbogen was so happy to have her mom as her teacher.
"Mom!" Phoebe greeted in her typical singsong voice, which was the main reason why an introvert like Teddy managed to vaguely remember her from middle school. "During lunch, I tried to talk with some people I knew from middle school, but I think they all still hold a grudge against me for what I did during that one group project. At least Fritz doesn't still hold that grudge against me, but he's in the grade above me and still, I wish more of the people from middle school were willing to look past that mistake."
Mrs. Regenbogen patted her daughter's head. "I'm sorry to hear that, Phoebe," she said in the same singsong voice as her daughter, "but I'm supposed to be here as your class's teacher, and the principal will get angry and say my paycheck was a waste of budget if I keep not doing my job..."
"Oh! Sorry mom," Phoebe said in realization, immediately backing away to stand amongst the rest of the class. Teddy noticed that Phoebe eventually settled next to the Felicity girl who had been late to math class earlier.
"Sorry about that, class," Mrs. Regenbogen apologized. "Anyway, as I was saying, I am Mrs. Regenbogen and I will be your music and drama teacher."
At this, a boy in the class suddenly raised his hand, which Mrs. Regenbogen acknowledged with a nod and a "yes, mister...?"
"Liam. Well, technically Liam Blitz, but you know," the boy who raised his hand answered. "Anyways, aren't music and drama electives? So why is our whole grade here? What about the people who want to take different electives?"
"Honestly, I was wondering about that too," Mrs. Regenbogen said, "but our principal just said he only had enough in the budget for one elective teacher. And he also said that if students were allowed to start their own clubs, then they really don't need electives. Oh, speaking of clubs, if any of you are interested in performing for the school, the drama club is meeting today in this very room after school, so feel free to swing in and check us out if you're interested in joining!"
Does this school even have enough people for a drama club? Even if there were a lot of people within the school interested, I don't think it's enough to put on a whole play, Teddy thought, but then she overheard Phoebe desperately trying to rope Felicity and another freshman into joining the drama club that her mom just mentioned. So they don't actually have enough members...
"Anyway, first, I want to figure out if any of you are already proficient with any instruments," Mrs. Regenbogen said. "Raise your hand if you play any instruments."
Teddy looked around, but it seemed as if only Phoebe and the other girl that Phoebe tried roping into the drama club played any instruments.
"Phoebe, honey, I know you're already proficient in several instruments," Mrs. Regenbogen said.
"Wow, you know how to play more than one instrument?" the other girl who raised her hand asked.
Phoebe nodded. "I know how to play the piano, the guitar, and the violin, but of course, my favorite instrument is my voice."
