Pain. That's all I felt when I started to wake up. Pain in my arms, ribs, stomach, and my thigh. I checked my phone. 7am. Love that I can't sleep in even when it's a weekend. Oh and it's Halloween. I told Jay I would be spending it with them as they requested. I get up and brush my hair and teeth. I also put on my turtleneck as my neck has his handprint across it. As I make my way downstairs, the smell of coffee and waffles fills my nose. Mom is cooking instead of mama. It's not unusual but I definitely thought mama would be cooking.

"Good morning my love! How did you sleep?" Mom said as she kissed my forehead. "I slept okay." I said as I was making myself my coffee. "Where's mama? It's a weird sight to see you in the kitchen this early." I laugh as I take a sip and watch mom scowl but laugh at my comment.

"Mama had a little too much wine last night and stayed up way too late. So I decided to let her sleep in. Although she can't resist the smell of pumpkin waffles. I assume that same smell woke you up little lady." She laughed as she poked my stomach. She missed the bruises thankfully.

As if on cue, mama walks in the kitchen holding her hand to her head. Hangover. Gotta love. She doesn't say anything as she heads for the coffee pot and pours herself a cup. She takes a sip and moans with relief. Me and mom both laugh.

"Can you guys stop shouting? Damn it's like 7:30 in the morning." That makes us laugh even harder. I go to our medicine cabinet and take out 2 Tylenol and 2 ibuprofen for mama and the same for me. I hand mama hers and she shoots me a grateful smile. I take mine as well.

"Love, why are you taking some too? Did you drink last night?" Mom inquires while fixing mama's plate. "What? Oh no. I just have a killer headache right now." It's partially true. My neck is connected to my head which is also connected to my arms.

We all sit down and start eating. Thinking about the pain I'm in, I suddenly lose my appetite. I eat a few bites to make it look like I'm eating but I guess that didn't go unnoticed by mom. "Are my waffles really that bad, Max?" I look up and see her staring at me.

"No mom they are great. I just don't have much of an appetite this morning." I say looking back down. "Are you okay, love? Did something happen last night at the party?" Mama asks as she sips more of her coffee.

"No not at all! I had a great time!" I said a little too quickly. Now they both were staring.

"Baby you can tell us anything you know that right, my heart?" Mom tells me.

"Yes mom, I know. I think I just stayed up too late and woke up too early and that's why my head is hurting. The waffles and coffee are delicious mom. I promise." I say getting up to wash my plate.

I bump my bruised thigh against the counter as I turn to head to the couch. I hold in the wince that almost slipped out. I sit down and open Instagram and see Haylee posted about the party last night and how she loved talking to teenage boys about feminism. How does she do that? Not care if people treat her rudely because of her basic belief in women's rights. I stalked more of her page and just awed at how confident and beautiful she was. I wish that was me. Maybe one day I could go to a protest with her. It's something I would like to do I think. I would do it if Jay wasn't so anti feminist.

I turn the tv on to Spotify and play my spooky playlist as moms clean the kitchen. I offered to help but they declined. I zone out into the music ignoring what moms are talking about.

"Okay she is acting weird, right?" Nat said to Wanda as she washed the pan.

"Yeah. I noticed her lack of eye contact and her obviously tensed shoulders when I brought up the party. Do you think something could have happened? She seemed dismissive last night when she got home but I was drunk and assumed she was tired." Wanda replied drying the plate.
