When I walked into his room and saw him laying there with no shirt, my heart dropped. We had done it before but I knew this time would be different. He was in control. I didn't want to give in. This isn't what I thought tonight would entail. I thought we would get into our Ed & Lorraine Warren costumes for the party and pretend to be a happy couple. I guess we would still do that but this would have to come first.
Meanwhile downstairs, all the decorations, food, and games were set up by his mom for the party. His parents didn't really care what he did. I sometimes wonder if they are victims too. I could hear people from school trickling in and blasting music. Great. Now no one can hear us. My heart is in my throat. There's no escaping now.
"You look so beautiful babe. We should have a little fun before we join the fun downstairs." He said while smirking. I didn't look him in the eye. I couldn't. He inched closer to me and pressed his lips against mine. This feeling isn't welcomed but also isn't new. I could bare this. His hands squeezed my arms causing me to wince. He ignored it. I didn't fight him. As he lays me on the bed on top of me, I could feel his heavy breathing. No no no, please. I began to panic. I shut my eyes tight. I somehow managed to push him off of me. As I opened my eyes, I was met with dark, angry brown eyes.
I feel his right hand squeeze against my throat constricting my airway. I was pushed up against the wall. "You do not get to say no. You are in my house." He said firmly, glaring into my probably bloodshot eyes.
Just then there were footsteps coming towards the room. He took his hand off of me and said, "If you ever push me again, you'll regret it." Thank God for whoever was looking for the bathroom.
As I went into his bathroom to get changed, I could see the dark purple and black handprint on my neck. Shit. Well good thing Lorraine Warren wears turtle necks. I step out and Jay must've already been downstairs. My arms were aching as well as my ribs from a shove down the stairs from the other day. I popped some ibuprofen hoping that would help a little. My throat burned when swallowing. I just won't talk much tonight. Also no alcohol.
I went downstairs and saw Jay with his best friend Cameron. Cameron was just as much of a jerk as Jay. I avoided him at all costs. They were playing beer pong. I was secretly good at it from my practice with mama when we played soda pong. It was always me and mama versus mom. Mom was too good but we managed to beat her together a couple times.
I don't have a lot of friends. I just keep to myself. I didn't realise how hungry I was until I smelled the jack-o-lantern shaped pizzas. I hid in the pantry to have a slice so Jay wouldn't know. It was my first time eating in 2 days. Mmm. So fucking good.
As the night progressed on, I could smell alcohol on Jay's breath when we were sitting near the bonfire. It's weird how alcohol can easily bring anger out in someone. Whoever was talking seemed to be pissing him off because he was gripping my thigh hard as I was on his lap and rolling his eyes. As I tuned in to what the girl was saying I understood why he was mad. It was Haylee. She was talking about some feminist protest she attended and how it was great to see men get uncomfortable. I loved what she had to say until I was pulled back to reality because my thigh was going numb. I whispered to him that I had to use the bathroom.
What I didn't know is Haylee was following me. When I was about to shut the door she slipped in and shut it. "I don't like the way he treats you. Everyone else might not see it but I do. You don't have to stay with him you know. There's better out there for you." I stood there not looking her in the eye. I didn't know what to say. Deep down I knew she was right. Well, was she? Jay was the best I'd ever get.
"I love Jay." I said weakly. "He doesn't treat me bad. He's just passionate." She looked at me disbelieving.
"Yeah that's why when I was talking about ending the patriarchy, he had a white knuckle grip on your thigh." I looked down. "Can you let me go pee in peace please, Haylee?" She rolled her eyes and said, "When you're ready I'll be here."
As she walked out and shut the door I put my hands on the counter and looked down. I have never been closed off to the idea of women. Jay just happened to come along first.
No Max. Stop thinking you have a chance with her. She is beautiful. And smart. She knows how to stick up for herself. I wish I knew how. At one point in my life I knew how. I don't know where that knowledge went.
Most people had begun to leave so I started to clean up. It was midnight. I was aching all over. Damn ibuprofen did absolutely nothing. I went over to Jay who was almost passed out on the couch to say goodbye.
"Jay, I'm gonna go home. I said I would be home by 12:30." He looked up with squinted eyes. "Yeah whatever see you later." Such a gentleman!
I got in my car and blasted the heat. It took everything not to cry. I couldn't come home with tear streaks. I knew they would be waiting up for me. I pulled into the driveway and turned over the key and got out. The lights were dimly lit and moms were up watching 'Before I Wake' on Netflix. One of my favorites. They looked up and smiled.
"There's our favorite demon hunter! You look great Lorraine! How was the party?" Mom asked.
As I made my way over to sit across from them I said, "Oh you know, just the typical teenage Halloween party. The best part was the jack-o-lantern shaped pizzas." They laughed. "I forgot about those! We used to get them all the time when you were little." Mama said.
"I'm gonna head to bed. I'm beat." Really Max?! A little too on the nose. "Are you sure baby? You love this movie!" Mama asked. "Yeah mama. But I promise we can watch 'Hocus Pocus' tomorrow!" I said tiredly. I walked over and kissed their cheeks. "Love you moms." "We love you more, our heart!"
I got upstairs and shut my door. I peeled my clothes off ready to hop in the shower. As the hot water ran down my bruised body, I couldn't help but cry. I hated that I looked like this. That I was defenceless. I hated the thought of my moms looking at me like this. They would be so sad. I haven't been taking care of their heart like I was raised to. I got out after about 15 minutes and dried off and slipped into my PJs. Mom must've changed my sheets. Good thing I cleaned my room.
I started to think about Haylee. What she said to me. Could I go to her for help? It didn't take me long to drift off to sleep. Hopefully tomorrow my body wouldn't hurt as bad.
