None of us knew that tonight would be the most frightening Halloween night any of us would ever have.

The scent of mama's chicken noodle soup filled my nose, gently waking me up. I think she knew it would do that. I get up and sit down on the toilet. I notice how dark the handprint on my thigh is and I just sigh. I finish up and wash my hands and make my trek downstairs. Since I woke up with pain again, I am walking pretty slowly until I reach the kitchen where mama is standing over the stove stirring the soup, while mom is trying to fix the crooked family portrait above the medicine cabinet.

"Hey darling, how was your nap?" Mama asked while adding in some salt.

"It was...restful." I say contently. "Do you need any help, mama?"

"It's your mom that needs help." We look over and see her standing on the dining chair holding a nail in her mouth, one hand holding a hammer, and the other trying to balance the portrait straight up against the wall.

"Here baby, can you hold the nail and hammer until I can get this damn canvas straight?" She asks with her eyebrow quirked frustrated.

"Sure mom." I reply laughing.

She hands me the nail and hammer and asks me to stand back to make sure she's levelling it right. Once she has it levelled, I hand her the nail and then the hammer and she manages to make it stay straight.

She comes down off the chair and grabs my upper arm for support.

I wince loudly as she pressed on the most fresh bruise Jay left last night while showing me off to people. Suddenly my mom becomes Jay in my eyes and I begin to panic. I start hyperventilating and quickly run under the bar that is the kitchen island. I hold my knees up to my chest and try to calm my breathing but I can't.

"P-please don't hurt me, Jay. I'm s-sorry it won't happen again." I say thinking he will punish me for wincing.

"Baby....Max...Max! It's me, it's mom. I won't hurt you baby. Listen to my voice. You need to take a deep breath, baby. Can you do that for me?" Nat says with panic in her voice, trying to keep it together.

Nat POV

I don't dare touch her in this state. I don't have time to think about why this is happening, just that it is. I need her to calm down before she passes out or makes herself sick. I see Wanda make her way over to where we are and she crouches down next to me. She shot me a look that I have seen many times on missions with her. The look of desperation.

Wanda and I have had to help Max with panic attacks before, but none this severe.

She yelped so loudly when I gripped her arm for support off the chair. I had hurt my daughter. Until she uttered the name Jay. I didn't have time to be angry at whatever he has done to my daughter. I need to be here for Max.

"Baby, mama is here too. It's just us and you in the room. Please Max, try and take a deep breath. We won't touch you. We just need you to listen to our voices." I plead to my baby girl.

"Sweetheart, take one deep breath and hold in for 3 seconds. In 2, 3 and out 2, 3." Wanda says to her.

Max seems to have heard that and follows Wanda's instructions.

"Okay good baby. Now, what are 5 things you can see?" She asks Max.

"Uh...uh the barstool. The wall. You. Mom. And my socks."

"Good baby. Now four things you can hear." I say next to remind her we are both here.

"The soup boiling, my heartbeat, my spooky playlist, and your voice."
