I wake up around midnight to Reeves gently shaking my shoulder, trying to wake me up as we have just pulled into to his parents driveway. My eye lids flutter open as I take in my surroundings, in front of me is a small log cabin, all the lights blaring as a few figures silently move around the interior.
I unbuckle my seatbelt and open the door, stretching my arms upward as I step out. I start to make my way to the door, Reeves trailing behind me. As I reach out to grab the door handle Reeves grabs my elbow, stopping me. He quickly spins me around and pulls me close, our chests touching as he stares into my eyes. I see the long ride has calmed him down as his previously black eyes are back to their normal shade of blue. He pulls me close to him, our chests pressed together as one hand rests on my waist and the other remains on my elbow.
"I'm sorry about earlier. I didn't mean to scare you the way I did." He whispers, my breath mixing in with his as he leans in closer. Right as our lips are about to make contact the door next to us whips open.
I immediately pull away from him, straightening out, rubbing my elbow where my skin is left tingling, though his hand is no longer placed there. I quickly turn to the door, a forced smile on my face and come face to face with the women who opened the door. She is short and petite, her medium length brown hair is streaked with silver, a sign of her age. She looked about 50 and she probably had Reeves when she was rather young. She holds little resemblance to him, only her identical blue eyes that squint as she smiles widely at me.
She takes a step to the side, her arm gesturing for us to come in. "Come in, come in." She says her voice jolly even though it is so late at night. I step inside and Reeves follows behind, gently placing his hand on the small of my back. I allow him to guide us in to the living room and take a seat next to him on the love seat as she sits across from us.
She beams at us, her skin wrinkling as she does so. I return it with a small, yet genuine, smile. "You must be Della." She says in a sweet voice. I can see Reeves roll his eyes out of the corner of my eye and I subtly ram my elbow into his side, making him choke in pain.
He exchanges a few words with his mother and then abruptly stands up. "I think we will be going to bed now. I'm exhausted and I'm sure Della is to. We will catch up in the morning." And with that he takes my hand and leads me up the stairs and into the guest room we will be staying in.
I silently change into my pajamas and climb into the bed next to him. He wraps his sturdy arm around me, pulling me to his side. I fit my head into the crook of his neck and close my eyes. "I love your mom, by the way." I say quietly and yawn. I close my eyes and sleep engulfs me.
