Kylie

She watched as Spencer shot Paulina. Paulina slumped forward. Lifeless.

Kylie woke up screaming, "No!" She thrashed on the bed, or tried to. "Where is she?" Looking around frantically, "Is she...is..."

"Calm down, Kylie." Spencer spoke softly to her.

They lay in the bed together. Had she passed out? It seemed that way. She must have passed out and Spencer stayed with her, holding her. Why would he do that?

"But..." Calm down? How can he tell me to calm down? He killed her. "You..." She tried again. It seemed she could not speak. Her words kept getting caught in her throat.

Spencer fixed a strand of her hair behind her ear as he looked into her eyes. "Yes I killed her."

"But..."

"No." His voice was firm. "No buts. She had a grenade, Kylie. She would have killed us all."

It hit her then. The plane or part of it would have blown up. Either way they would have all died regardless. Paulina was on a mission. She truly believed Spencer had killed her sister.

"Did you kill her?" Kylie had to know.

"Paulina? Yes. You watched me do it." He was so matter of fact.

She tried to speak, her voice stuck in her throat again. Kylie cleared her throat, "No, Patrice. Her sister. Did you kill her?" She whispered the last part unsure of whether or not he even heard her, as she lay facing him. For some reason she needed to know. She had to know if in fact he had killed Patrice. Did Paulina target the wrong man?

He rubbed her back gently as he answered her, "No. She was already dead when I got there. A needle in her arm."

Did this make her feel better? Paulina believed so strongly Spencer had killed her sister. If she did overdose like Spencer just said, was it okay that he killed Paulina? Would he lie to her? He did in fact save her and the crew on the plane as well as himself. Why would he lie though? He hadn't lied to her yet, why would he lie about this?

"If it makes you feel any better, when I looked into Paulina's background, it turns out she was suicidal all her life. Even before Patrice. She had been in and out of psych facilities." There was a beep and he checked his phone. "It was only a matter of time for her."

"But you killed her...like she was nothing. Like she didn't matter." Killing her seemed easy for him. Would he kill her just as easily? Kylie had asked him and he said that he wouldn't. He had made it sound like she was his indefinitely.

Oh my god. Is that what this is? Did he kidnap me to keep me? With that thought she felt butterflies in her stomach. What is the matter with me? Do I want to stay with him?

Spencer continued rubbing her back. "Sweet Kylie, you need to understand." His voice was soft. "I did what I did for you. I saved you."

She glanced down needing to clear her mind without his face distracting her. He saved me. It still shocked her that he wanted her. Spencer took Kylie and kept her because he wanted her.

She never considered herself a raving beauty. Spencer seemed to like the way she looked though. He seemed very satisfied with everything about her.

Glancing back up at him she saw he was watching her. His stare was intense as usual. It was almost as if he could see right into her soul. He saved me. He took a life to save mine. "Why?" Kylie asked, "Why did you save me?"

He looked down at her, "To tell you the truth, I don't know."

"What?" His answer surprised her. Her head began throbbing and she held her forehead and closed her eyes to try and quell the throb. Spencer caressed the side of her face. His touch made her feel better instantly.

"I have never cared about anyone before. Ever. If you care about someone then that means you need them." His face seemed pained. "My whole life I have been alone. Taking life never bothered me because life didn't seem to matter to me."

Was he seriously saying what he was saying? Her heart rate began speeding up. What? "Life didn't matter to you?" How was that possible? Didn't he have a family? Friends? Acquaintances?

"No, it did not. Life was insignificant." He blinked for a second. When Spencer's eyes opened they looked glassy.

"Haven't you ever loved someone? A mother? Father? Friend?" She asked, afraid she already knew the answer.

"No. I never knew any family." Spencer answered, seeming like he was remembering. "All I had were case workers who were more heartless than the supposed foster families who cared so much." He swallowed. "As soon as I could get away and make my own life, I did. This life is not ideal but it's mine."

Kylie felt like she had been punched in the gut. His openness not only surprised her but it hit close to home as well. Too close actually. But through it all she had Jackie. He seemed to have had no one. This truth hurt her heart.

She pictured little Spencer running around a playroom, with no one there to play with him or comfort him when he was hurt. How could that happen? Her life wasn't always perfect but she had people that cared about her. People that loved her and she loved back. It was few but she still felt love and comfort. Spencer had had no one.

Shit. Don't say the wrong thing Kylie. You don't want him to close up. "Have you killed a lot of people?"

He looked amused by her question and smiled slightly, "That isn't a question you need to know the answer to."

Kylie decided it was probably better if she left that alone. It was better if she didn't know everything. He saved her life and that's what mattered. Her next question scared her but she couldn't stop herself from asking. "Where do I fit into all this? Your life? I mean, was I a job?"

Spencer grabbed her face and kissed her then. A soft, seductive, gentle kiss. When the kiss ended, she couldn't remember her own name, never mind her question.

"I saw you one morning opening the café. Everything changed that morning." He blurted. "I saved you because I need you."

Shock. Complete and utter shock. "You need me?" She breathed.

Looking down at her he nodded his answer. Then he pulled her to him and held her.
