My heart lurched in my chest, the sound of something slamming downstairs waking me in a jolt. I look at the bed beside me and see Vanessa dead to the world. I make it out of my room as I see Tyler on the other end of the hall, his eyes wide and a name on his lips. "Anna." I follow him down the stairs, practically launching ourselves as we descend. As we approach the kitchen, Greg is on top of Steve, his fists covered in blood. "Fuck!" Tyler pulls him off his unconscious father as my eyes trail to the corner of the kitchen where Anna had her knees pulled to her chest, her head buried in her arms.
"Baby." I kneel on the ground beside her, reaching for her but she flinches away. "What happened?"
"I came downstairs because I forgot my phone on the back porch. I saw the light on and heard something, so I came in here and found him on top of her with his hand over her mouth. And then everything just kind of went black." He glanced at Tyler, "is he alive?"
"Unfortunately for him." Tyler came to kneel beside me, in front of Anna, but not touching her. "Anna. Princess. Look at me. You're okay."
Anna lifted her head, glancing at Tyler before her gaze fell on me, "Anna." She reached for me, letting me pull her into my lap as I sighed, leaning back against the wall. She buried her head in my chest as I looked up to see a group now forming, Chase and Lindsey standing in the doorway with Greg's friends behind them. "Someone should call 911, yeah?"
"Fuck." Chase nodded, leaving the room.
"She doesn't need everyone staring at her, go!" Greg hollered at his friends and Lindsey to leave the room before turning back to Tyler, "come on."
"Greg?" The small voice came from my chest as Anna lifted her head to seek him out.
As soon as he heard her he was on his knees in front of me as she wrapped her arms around his neck. He hesitated but pulled her to his chest as she sobbed quietly, still half on my lap. "It's okay little one."
I didn't move, but wondered what more there was between them, causing jealousy to fill my gut. I glanced up at Tyler and he seemed to hear my inner voice as he shook his head, "Greg is her brother. It's a whole thing. What if Vanessa comes down here? Seeing you holding her like that?"
I shook my head as Anna settled back against my chest, "I don't give a shit about Vanessa." I hear the sirens, glancing over at Steve grunting on the ground, his face bloody and bruised. That's when I hear her voice.
"What the fuck is going on?" Vanessa makes it to the kitchen, noticing Steve first, launching herself on him, crying. "What happened?"
"My father raped Anna." Tyler's hands were balled into fists, his knuckles white as he paced the kitchen. Greg grabbed his shoulder, causing him to calm down slightly, but still didn't release his fists.
"I'm sure that's not true. He probably just got a little rough." She scoffed, glancing around the room at Greg and Tyler before landing on me with Anna in my arms. She tried to approach but Greg and Tyler both moved to stand in as a shield as I climbed to my feet, Anna still in my arms.
"She's fucking bleeding!" I slid my ring off, setting it on the counter before brushing past her, Greg and Tyler behind me as I carried her out to the paramedics. I set her on a stretcher as she clung to me.
"Don't leave me!"
"I won't. But you have to go and get checked out at the hospital and get checked out. I promise I won't leave your side."

I stood up from the bed as I watched Tyler enter, "Anna fell asleep. I'll be right back. Stay with her until I get back?"
He nodded, "yeah. Of course."
I leaned down to plant a kiss on Anna's head as she grabbed onto my hand, "you said you weren't going to leave me."
"I know baby. But I have to." I carded my fingers through her dark hair, "Tyler is here. I have to go and bail Greg out of jail. And keep Vanessa and Steve from pressing charges." I smiled, "your father is the Dean? Things can't be easy for us, can they?"
That caused a small smile to cross her lips, "yeah well. Nothing good comes easy, right?"
I sighed, watching her, "I'll have to make a deal with them so they don't press charges against your brother. He beat Steve unconscious. Warranted or not, they can still press charges."
Anna nodded, already knowing what I was asking, "I know. Do whatever you have to do to make sure he's okay. That we're all okay. And hurry back so you can take me home?"
"Of course baby. I'll be back with your brother. I promise." I glanced at Tyler and he nodded before crawling into bed beside her, pulling her to him. I took one more look at them before leaving them alone in the room. I walked down the hall to where I knew Steve was first. He was awake with Vanessa at his side when I walked in.
"What are you doing in here?"
His right eye was swollen shut, his face all bruised. "I need you to not press charges against Greg Jennings for coming to the defense of his sister for one. For two.." I looked at Vanessa, "I need you to sign the divorce papers without a fight. And give me my paternity test. If this gets out, it will ruin your family. You having a child that isn't your husband's is going to be bad enough." I looked back at Steve and could see him seething already. "You really want it getting out that you like to take advantage of girls half your age? Your son's friends no less."
Vanessa scoffed, "and what about you? When the Dean finds out about your relationship with Anna, he'll fire you."
I shrugged, "I will accept whatever consequences come from our relationship. Including being fired. What I won't accept is being married to you for one more fucking day!"
Steve put his hand up as I went to approach. "Fine. Just keep the girl quiet and we'll give you what you want."
I nodded curtly and turned to leave when I heard her voice behind me. "And I want the apartment!"
I rolled my eyes at Vanessa's declaration. "I don't give a fuck. I'll buy a new one. I'll get my stuff out today once I get Anna settled at home." I stalked out of the room without another glance behind me.
