36. Tis The Season

December 16th 1972, Saturday.

The small, tawny owl that James had gifted Astra almost a year ago - recently renamed Screech, considering how deafeningly loud she was when arriving at the correct destination - had made a guest appearance in the Great Hall that morning.

For how often Astra wrote to her mother (at least once a week), she barely ever received a response. She blamed it on Steven, her mothers boyfriend - well, now fiancé.

Astra had been so excited when Screech gracefully, and loudly, made her way through the Great Hall, landing purposefully in front of her with what could easily be interpreted as a proud grin painted onto her face.

Her hopes were high that the letter would contain their plans for the Christmas holidays, maybe a trip or even the proposal of having dinner with their estranged family.

No. That was not the case.

Instead, the letter contained in depth details of how the perfect, love of her life, Steven, had proposed on a windy, rainy day in the moors near where they lived. If this wasn't enough to completely ruin Astra's mood and Christmas break, they had also made a decision to go on a trip to celebrate, without her.

So that meant, the following day, when she and everyone else were supposed to be returning home for the Christmas holidays, Astra would have to stay at Hogwarts.

It wasn't the worst thing in the world, when she actually thought about it she would most likely have more fun staying at school than going home anyway. The Christmas Dinner would be miles better than anything her mother could make and she would even get to spend the time with some of her friends who were also hanging around for the holidays.

It was Remus that she was a little worried about.

Of course, he would also be staying at school for the holidays and of course the two of them are a lot closer now than they had been at this point the year before. However, last year when she sprung the idea of them spending Christmas together on him, he reacted badly.
