December 17th 1971, Friday.
Remus felt bad. No, he felt awful about what he had said. He didn't mean any of it, or maybe he did in a way, he wasn't exactly sure. All he knew is that it was the day after the full moon, and a pretty bad one at that.
He had woken up that morning in more pain than he had been in a long time. Every bone, every muscle, every inch of his body screaming out in distress. So when Astra had come to visit him in the Hospital Wing, she became the target of his heightened emotions.
He didn't want to spend Christmas with her family, that much was true. Seeing the life that could have so easily been his. The constant guilt he would feel in the pit of his stomach for not being the person he knew they would much rather have around. The uneasy fear that he was only there as a replacement. Not to mention the distressing secret that loomed over him like a heavy rain cloud.
There was also the issue of the next full moon falling during their break, New Year's Eve to be exact. Meaning he had to be either back at the orphanage, chained up inside the cage he had outgrown years ago. Or at school, buried in a slightly more spacious building deep within the forest. He knew which one he'd rather.
None of this of course was her fault, so he had no right to go off on her the way he did. But it was giving him a headache, her incessant nagging about his plans and insistency that he spend it with her. It caused the pounding in his head to increase at a rapid rate, so much so that he said whatever he could to make her stop. He knew it was nasty, but at least this way he wouldn't have to explain why he would need to disappear on New Year's Eve.
In all honesty, he would have loved to spend Christmas at Hogwarts with Astra and the rest of his friends. This place was the first place in a long time that he felt he belonged, these people actually cared about him, and he was beginning to care for them too. In a perfect world, had he not needed to worry about his condition and the full moons, the five of them would have stayed in the castle creating their own traditions that they could follow for years to come. But unfortunately, the world was not perfect, and this could never be possible.
"Remus?"
Suddenly snapping away from his thoughts, he glanced at the three boys surrounding him, all of whom had their eyes glued to him. He had missed almost all of their conversation.
"What?" He questioned, brows raised in confusion.
"Have you figured out the charm?" Peter asked him.
Shaking his head, he simply provided his friends with a look that meant he had no idea what they were talking about.
"For the prank? At dinner tonight?" Sirius added, laughing slightly. "Come on Remus, we've only been planning it for like a whole week."
"Oh right." He nodded, finally understanding what they were talking about. Everyone was going home for the holiday's on Sunday, so of course they had to do one final prank before they were separated for a whole two weeks. "Yeah I think so."
