........................................................................When Romano got to Chicago, Matthew's doctor was there. He confirmed that Matt was out of danger, but Romano looked at him lying helplessly on the bed, his face white like milk, and doubted it.
"Why is he still unconscious?"
The doctor looked up from Matt to Rom's face. He had never met the man, nor had his patient ever mentioned him in their long acquaintance. It was a known fact that Matthew Ocean had no family; this accident brought forth the existence of a man deemed important enough to be in control of all of Matthew's assets, and especially his life.
"No medical explanation to that. However, his vitals are excellent, so hopefully, he will awaken soon." that response didn't satisfy Rom; he pressed and pushed the doctor for a positive answer until Bruno pulled him away because he was harassing him.
"He can't give you the answer you want, Rom." Bruno gently said, dropping Rom's hand when they reached the hallway.
"Why won't he wake up?" B shrugged, leaning on the wall, his hands in his pocket. "We need to meet up with the people close to him."
Romano nodded, going back to the waiting room for Pete. Although they had never met, Matt's driver and bodyguard had been very helpful in providing information regarding the shooting. Maybe it's because he had met Bruno once when his boss went to New York for a wedding, or perhaps he respected Matt's choice in appointing Rom to act on his behalf if he was ever incapacitated.
With the help of Pete, Isaac, and Matthew's secretary, Mrs. Rodrigos, Romano called for an emergency board meeting of Ocean Corporation. By then, the country had heard of the shooting. According to the news, Matt was okay and recovering; Rom had threatened to sue everyone involved if the word got out that he was unconscious; that is why only a few people knew of it.
As Rom introduced himself, he thought how similarly boring corporate people were. He compared the semblance of this group to the meetings they usually held on every financial year of their Italian brother's winery in Italy.
"Until Mr. Ocean recovers, I will take over his position." A loud silence followed the words, like none of them had expected him to say those words and knew not how to process that bit of information.
"Until then, I would like to interview each one of you. I know the police have interviewed some of you, but I would like to have a private word as well."
"Are you in law enforcement?" Asked the company's COO, Mr. Benjamin Abbortt. Rom recognized him from the list of names he received that morning from Pete. He had been impressed by how proficient he was.
"No, Mr. Abbortt." Rom hid a smile at the surprise on the man's face when he recognized him by name. "I'm better." he didn't feel the need to explain, glaring at the COO, who'd seemed to want to ask something further.
"Someone shot your boss yesterday night. I want to establish none of you is the culprit. To do that, you will all have to be questioned."
"Shouldn't that be the police's job?" Asked Benjamin in a puzzled tone. Rom nodded, then added, "im just helping them." Even though no one believed that Rom did not care, he regarded everyone in that room as suspects until the culprit was apprehended.
"Mr. Abbortt, I would like to start with you." Benjamin lifted his head, eyes widening in shock, almost in a panic. Rom was a good judge of character, and he perceived him as a questionable character or one with secrets. While he admitted most people had them, Benjamin, according to Rom, seemed like a man who would do anything to get to the top.
