Bitter Tears

"Come on, Al! There's gotta be something here that says something about this mysterious partner of hers! Besides, don't you wanna see the research? Or what she's testing it on?" That's what you woke up to in the middle of the night. You've been up on and off since Sans left, feeling how much he wanted you and missed you. No doubt be could feel that you missed him too. He could probably feel the stress you were under too, with snoops in the second floor. "I suppose... if we get caught though, I'm blaming you.." Alphys grumbled. You rose from your bed with a sigh. Looked to you like you were gonna be locking the doors and elevator from now on. You found them exactly where you would, in the lab area where the sample cures that had the highest rate of success were being kept in a minifridge. "I suggest leaving, I don't want the samples contaminated." They both froze as they started rifling through stuff. "[Y/N], we want more then that- who is this guy, what does he know about ferals, how does he know it?!" Undyne argued. "Leave my lab now, or you will be removed from the premises."

🧟‍♂️🧟‍♂️🧟‍♂️

It's been a few days now. Undyne had been persistent about learning about Sans, Alphys had been persistent about seeing the research, and Papyrus had been persistent about taking you back to the Underground. Thus, you made staying on the second floor priority unless you were going to get food. It was frustrating, you wanted to kick them out but at the same time... they were Sans family. He adored them, talked about them all the time. While you knew Sans didn't want to see him the way he was, you also didn't want to toss them out either without... something. You didn't know what that something was supposed to be, but some sort of closure or sign that he was ok. So you dealt with them. Plus with that many non-feral monsters around, there was a lot more ferals swarming the building than before. You groaned to yourself as you spun in a wheelie chair. Just a few more days and things would go back to normal... hopefully. You truly hoped so, because this self inflicted confinement was killing you without Sans.

🧟‍♂️🧟‍♂️🧟‍♂️

Sans rut finally ended, and just in time too, because he could feel your soul freaking out about something. He took a shortcut to the cafeteria, hoping that you would be there since it was around lunch time. He'd stopped at a convenience store and got you your favorite Little Debbie's snack as the start of what would be a long list of making it up to you for leaving you on your own for a week. "gracious, i'm home baring gif-" Only... you weren't there. It was someone else. Frisk dropped a frozen Hot Pocket on ground, startled beyond belief. "Sans?!" He noped the hell out of there and onto the second floor, pacing. "they are here, they saw me, oh stars-"
"Sans! Thank the stars your here!" He felt himself get hugged from behind, he wrapped an arm around her instinctively. "why were they here..?"
"I found them after you left, trapped by ferals. I brought them here and- it's been stressful without you, I didn't want to say anything that would upset you-"
"sh, sh it's fine.. i'm here now.." Sans sighed. "frisk saw me, i thought you might be in the cafeteria.." You sighed and hugged him, trying to calm him down.

🧟‍♂️🧟‍♂️🧟‍♂️

You both took time to just relax and unwind. "i'm gonna have to reveal myself now, frisk saw me." You leaned into his shoulder. "They would have questions, we have answers." You offered. "They would stop breathing down our backs." Sans nuzzled into you. "after we answered all their questions." You hummed. "True." Neither of you moved. "undyne is probably gonna come banging on the door any minute now." You shook your head. "Entire second floor is locked down." Sans smiled. "sweet. but why?"
"Digging through stuff they weren't supposed to."
"... you aren't moving anytime soon, are you?" You groaned and lifted your head. "I was enjoying the moment, Sans!" He snickered and stretched as he got up. "your procrastination is much appreciated, but i miss my bro. let's just get this over with, gracious." He helped you to your feet and you were both heading to the door to the other floors. You both took your sweet old time going downstairs to the cafeteria where Frisk had gathered everyone. "I swear, he was right here and he was looking at me with wide, feral eyes-"
"Wouldn't he have attacked you then?" Undyne asked skeptically. "not necessarily." Sans replied.

🧟‍♂️🧟‍♂️🧟‍♂️

They were all staring at him now, disbelief written upon their faces. You could feel that he was uncomfortable, but determined, to talk to them. "This guy here is the reason behind our research. His- no- your guy's father had cured Sans from ferality at the cost of his own life. We are trying to recreate it using samples of Sans magic and other compounds." Sans nodded. "that's about the gist of it. these past few years have been pretty slow until [Y/N] came along. i didn't really wanna put anyone in danger so... i just made myself disappear." Sans averted his gaze, his regret pulsing through both your souls. "by the way... you've grown kiddo." Frisk's breath hitched as they burst into tears. "Dammit, Sans, you can't just disappear for years then say stuff like that!" Undyne raged, trying and failing to noogie Sans as he teleported away, laughing. "i missed you too undyne."
"If I could, I would love to help you continue with your cure." Alphys requested, startling Sans a tad. "uh, sure." Then he found himself standing before Papyrus, the regret eating away at him. "... hey general.." Papyrus scoffed, looking away for a moment, but you could see the tears in his sockets. You could see his resolve deteriorating at a fast pace. "SANS YOU IMPICILE, NEVER LEAVE ME AGAIN!" He scooped Sans into a big hug, something you'd never seen the General do before, as he sobbed.
