The job got easier throughout the next couple of days, Peter was less of a pain in my ass about rules and I didn't see much of my annoying coworker, Arthur. It was actually kind of nice.It almost made me forget I was working for an awful, backstabbing, old man who experiments on children.
Nothing too unusual happened from day to day, all I would do is write down things that were out of the ordinary. A doctor going into an electrical closet, a scientist hiding something behind their back when talking to a supervisor. I'm not sure why I had to keep such a close eye on these types of details but it isn't like I could refuse and get another job.
Writing down in the notebook on the desk I felt a hand on my shoulder. I finished what I was writing down and saw my boss, Dr. Brenner, standing in the room with me and Peter. My heart sank as my eyes darted between the two men.
"Is there something you need?" I ask Brenner. "No, I just came in to let you know you'll be on your own next week," He explained, I noticed a sad glint in Peter's blue eyes.
"But keep up the good work in here and maybe I'll have you stationed in the Rainbow Room sometime." He said and left the room.
I look at Peter as his posture relaxed. "What's the Rainbow Room?" I ask him with a confused tone. "It's like a playroom for the children," Peter said and pointed at the screen, "Don't get distracted, Sophie." He said changing the subject.
The room was silent after Brenner left, it now felt like I was dragging till noon hit. "Hey, Sophie," Peter's soft voice broke the silence, "Would it be alright if I joined you for lunch?" He asked, leaning on the desk.
"Yeah, I ran out of my leftovers though so I'm not sure what I'll eat today," I said, thinking I might just listen to music and read. "I can find something," Peter said quickly trying to find any reason to spend time with me. Weird... first the hallucinations and now his behavior.
I could only smile and nod and go back to my boring work as I could feel his eyes drill into the back of my head. Just had to make it till noon to see what he was up to, luckily for me that was only a five-minute wait.
Soon that wait was over as I almost immediately jumped from my seat and stretched my arms upwards, standing on my toes to stretch my legs. "Alright Peter, what are we having?" I ask and turn towards him.
"I said I'll find something, not make something." He smirked and opened the door for me. What a gentleman.
As we walked into the common rooms I followed Peter to the kitchen, "I guess I still have to wait for you to unlock my door." I said leaning against the counter, watching him open the fridge in search of someone else's cooked goods.
"He's got you locked up like a princess in a tower and can't even cook you a decent meal." I heard a cocky voice appear next to me, looking over to see Arthur. The white uniform looked a bit tight around his arms and chest as he leaned over the counter next to me.
"I'm not a princess..." I simply replied, looking back over at Peter as he looked through cabinets waiting for something to heat up in the microwave.
"You're not a princess? Well, you could've had me fooled. Maybe I can save you from your evil captor." Arthur said moving closer to me. He leaned down close to me as I glanced at him quickly. "Maybe I could be your prince?"
"Looks like my lunch is ready, see you later!" I move away from him and go to help Peter carry a bowl of what looked like chicken soup. Arthur looked annoyed that he couldn't get a moment with me but I'd rather spend every waking moment with Peter than a minute with him.
Peter escorted me to my room, letting me in first before closing and locking the door behind him. "Do you still not trust me to run off?" I ask him setting my bowl down on the nightstand next to my bed. Peter looked a bit confused as he sat down his food on the desk as well. "You lock the door even when you're in here," I explained sitting on my bed and grabbing my food to start eating.
