As night fell, Jean strode across the island alone. Earlier that day, Marie had given him directions to a port located on the north side of the island. Using his map, Jean arrived at his first marker—an old, abandoned church. Peering cautiously from an opening in the stone wall, Jean heard a rumbling noise and ducked. Sneaking a look, he saw a most peculiar procession patrolling the street. It was an enormous mechanical giant followed by a truck loaded with masked soldiers. Looking closer, Jean saw that the tanklike robot and the truck were connected by a long rope.
JEAN: That truck is being pulled around by the robot?! But no! Maybe the truck operates it like a human tank!
The truck slowed to a stop as a second group of soldiers appeared on the side of the road. The prime soldier approached the truck window to speak with the field chief.
PRIME SOLDIER: Neo Atlan!
FIELD CHIEF: Neo Atlan.
PRIME SOLDIER: The children have not yet been found.
FIELD CHIEF: When they are captured, the girl is not to be harmed.
PRIME SOLDIER: Understood!
FIELD CHIEF: Very well. Return to your post.
PRIME SOLDIER: Understood!
As the truck drove away, Jean reflected on the soldiers' exchange.
JEAN: "Children"? They're looking for us, just as I thought! "The girl is not to be harmed"? ... He's talking about Nadia! But why? (Sighing) I need to find that port! I'm here, so that must be north. Then... this is the road Marie told me about!
Dashing down the trail, Jean soon came within sight of the port. Climbing to the branch of a tree just outside the port, Jean took his telescope and surveyed his surroundings.
JEAN: They've got it locked up tight! I'll never be able to sneak in there! Look at all those crates! I wonder what's inside of them? Goodness! They have it lit up as bright as day! Even Paris doesn't have this many lights! But I don't see any power lines.
Taking another look, Jean noticed an entire network of power lines extending from the port to the massive crater at the center of the island. At the top of the crater was an ominous structure—it looked like a big castle.
Just then, an alarm wailed through the air. Shifting his attention back to the port, Jean spotted a fugitive diving off the edge of a dock, trying to swim away. Unfortunately, the soldiers were right behind him! Leveling their rifles, they targeted the escaping man and opened fire. Moments later, a pool of blood rose to the surface. Horrified at the sight, Jean shuddered.
Back at the cave, Nadia was waiting for Jean to return when Marie tugged on her shoulder.
MARIE: My good night kiss?
NADIA: Your what?
MARIE: Good night kiss. Mama always gives me one.
Nadia leaned down and kissed Marie on the forehead.
NADIA: Have sweet dreams, Marie.
MARIE: That's wrong!
NADIA: Hmm?
KING: (Questioning Growl)
MARIE: You have to say "Good night, my dear Marie" like Mama says it!
NADIA: Oh... Please forgive me.
Nadia kissed Marie again.
KING: (Flustered Growl)
