*****FLASHBACK, 1 WEEK BEFORE 16TH BIRTHDAY *****
I was sitting in my bedroom with my mom going through some magazines looking for a dress for my party.
"Mom, I don't want to be the pretty-pretty princess." I said as she was showing me big ballroom style gowns. "I just want something fun that can dance in with the girls. Dad is insistent on having a big party, can't I have the dress I want?" I asked and she sighed.
"Hey, did you not want the big party?" My mom, Angela asked.
"No! I never did! I asked for a simple cook-out here at the house just the family and some friends. Dad was insistent on the party." I said. "He probably has business to conduct or something." I mumbled and my mother grabbed my chin and made me look at her.
"Hey, don't. He would never on your birthday. He knows how much this means to you." Angela said and I rolled my eyes. I went back to looking through magazines and there was a knock on my open door and my half-brother Sylvester stood there and looked at me and my mom.
"Hey sweetie." My mom said smiling at her. Sylvester wasn't her son but she always treated him like her own after his own mother died.
"Dad would like to see you." Sylvester said to Angela. She looked at me and smiled.
"I'll be back. Keep looking." She said and left. I looked at Sylvester who was still standing at my door.
"Can I help you?" I asked annoyed. He huffed laugh.
"You think you have it all don't you?" Sylvester said.
"Excuse me?" I asked confused.
"A mommy who loves you and a daddy you can wrap around your little finger. You need to be careful little girl. All of it could be taken away from you so fast." Sylvester said and I just looked at him oddly.
"Is that some kind on threat?" I asked. Sylvester didn't say anything and just walked away. I groaned and continued to look for a dress. My mom came back after about 20 minutes and I could tell she had been crying and she looked like she had been smacked.
"Mom?" I asked.
"Don't worry about it sweetie. Did you did you find something?" Angela asked and I gave a faint smile.
"I think the blue one that you like earlier was perfect." I said and she smiled at me.
"The Cinderella on Steroids dress. I think that's what you called it." Angela said and I laughed.
"Well maybe Matilda call take some tule from the bottom and not make it as puffy." I said and Angela nodded.
"Most likely. Why don't I go pick it up from the mall tomorrow and we take it to Matilda the day after." Angela said and I hugged my mom.
"I love you mom." I said and she kissed the side of my head.
"I love you too sweetie. Let's go show your dad that we found you a dress." Angela said and I grabbed the magazine and ran down to my dad's office and knocked on the door.
"Come in!" He said and I walked in and he smiled at me. "There's my princess." Gino said and I rushed around to his side of the desk.
"I found a dress, just with less tule." I said and he laughed and looked at Angela in the doorway. I put the magazine on his desk and he smiled.
"It's beautiful." Gino said.
"I'm going to pick it up at the mall tomorrow." Angela said and Gino nodded and grabbed his credit card from his wallet and handing it to me. I kissed his cheek again.
"Nothing is too expensive. Get her whatever she wants." Gino said as I rushed to my mom.
"Sounds good. I will go tomorrow." Angela said.
"Can I go too please? I want to see it." I said and Angela nodded.
"Sure." She said and I smiled and bounced with excitement.
🍬🍭🍬🍭🍬🍭
The next day my mom and I had been to the mall and picked up the dress and I even got a second dress that wasn't as formal and would be easier to dance with my friends in. We had bought shoes and scheduled my hair and nail appointment for the next week with the salon. Mom and I had stopped for lunch and just made it a complete girls day out.
"So I wanted to talk to you..." Angela said as we sat at lunch.
"About?" I asked.
"Your father is panicking because the boy you had in your room the other day." Angela said and I turned beet red.
"What boy?" I asked and Angela laughed.
"Sweetie, don't play stupid." She said and sighed.
"Okay there was a boy...his name is Oliver. He is a boy from school." I said and Angela sighed.
"I know we had had the sex talk. I just thought we also talked about when you were ready you would tell me." Angela said and I groaned.
"Mom...we were just making out. I'm not ready for that yet." I said and she sighed.
"Okay well don't let him pressure you and maybe just don't have him in your room when your dad is home." Angela said and I laughed.
"Solid plan." I said and she smiled. Once we were one eating we left the restaurant and were headed to the pizza shop to see my dad and show him my dress and everything. Mom was driving and out of no where a box truck hit her side of the car going a top rate of speed. I hit my head on my window and that was the last thing I remembered. I woke up laying in a hospital bed 3 days later with a broken leg, 3 broken ribs and a lot of bruises and cuts. I soon found out my mother died upon impact and I would be getting out of the hospital in a few days to help plan her funeral.
*****DAY OF FUNERAL*****
Her funeral was planned for the day of my birthday, I knew why and I also knew not to complain. After the funeral the wake was being held in the banquet hall where my party was supposed to be and I was sitting at a table with Marley and Harper. Gino came walking over to me and extended for me to take his hand.
"You need to make a speech." He said and I looked at him shocked.
"What?!" I asked confused.
"Everyone wants a voice of comfort and since you were the one who got her killed I figured you could make the speech." Gino said and I just looked at him.
"I didn't kill her!" I said in shock. Gino smacked me there in front of everyone then grabbed my arm dragging me to the hallway. Once in the hallway he pinned me against the wall.
"If you hadn't insisted on that dress and having the big ass party your mother would still be alive! You got her killed!" Gino said and smacked again.
"I didn't want the big party, you did!" I said and I was hit again on the opposite side. I was fighting off tears. Gino shoved me against the wall again 3 more times and I crumpled to the floor.
"Get out of my sight. I don't want to see you. Go home and stay in your fucking room." Gino said and walked back into the banquet hall. I knew then the days of my mother being my protector were over and I was the new punching bag.
