The day had come

The day had come. The day they found Will Byers body. The body was found in the lake.

Clara knew about the chances. The chances of Will coming back alive and the chances of him winding up dead. She knew the chances of him being alive were slim but she still held onto the thought and had hope.

Mike was a wreck after they found the body. The worst thing was that he was there to witness the body. He was with Dustin, Lucas and Eleven, looking for Will. They did find Will but not in the way they wanted.

Clara went to school the next day, hearing all the chatter about Will. She was trying to avoid the topic but it was impossible. Hawkins was a small town and if anything happened, people would know about it.

Clara sat in her algebra class with Ms. Dillon reading when the teacher stopped reading. Clara looked up to see a woman standing in the classroom doorway. "Clara Wheeler? If you'll come with me please."

She heard the annoying "oohs" from all of her classmates as she grabbed her backpack. "Oh, shut up."

She walked over to the woman with her backpack on, following her to where they were going. She followed her until they reached the cafeteria. She looked inside to see her mom and Nancy sitting across from two deputies. She knew this wouldn't be good.

The deputies questioned the twins, mostly Nancy about the disappearance of Barb. Clara was only asked a few questions while Nancy was asked tons. All the questions and interrogation got to her head and made her anxious.

The drive home from school was uncomfortable silence between Nancy and Karen. Karen knew Nancy was lying about what she was doing with Steve and she was angered. Clara sat in the backseat watching the silent showdown. She could cut the tension with a knife.

Once they got home, Nancy stormed into the house with her mother following. Clara jogged her way up to them just incase she needed to step in.

"You lied to the police!"

"I didn’t lie!" Nancy denied her mother's claim.

Karen threw her leather purse onto the counter. "How naive do you think I am? You and Steve were just talking?"

"We slept together!" Nancy confessed. "Is that what you want to know? It doesn’t matter!"

"It does matter!"

"No!" Nancy turned back to her mother. "It is all bullshit! It has nothing to do with Barb and she’s missing. And something terrible happened to her. I know it. I know it! And no one is listening to me!"

Karen gripped onto her daughter by her forearms. "Sweetie, sweetie, I’m listening. I’m listening to you."

"No! You’re not!" Nancy pulled out of her mother's grasp.

Karen watched as her daughter ran up the set of stairs. "Nancy... Nancy!"

"Just leave me alone!"

Karen glanced at Clara, telling her to help in some sort of way. Clara listened to her mother's pleas and followed her sister upstairs.

Clara heard the door slam and waited for Nancy to cool off. After standing at the door for a minute, she barged into the room and shut the door behind her, causing Nancy to turn quickly. "Clara! What the hell-"

Clara cupped her hand over her sister's mouth to keep her quiet. "Shh. I don't want mom listening in." Nancy calmed down, leading Clara to remove her hand. "I believe you. A bunch of weird shit has been happening in Hawkins and it's not just a coincidence."

"I know." Nancy agreed. "I think Barb's disappearance is connected to Will."

"Me too." Clara nodded, agreeing with Nancy. Clara looked away from Nancy to see the scattered photos on the bed. "What's that?"

"Photos Jonathan took the night of Barb's disappearance." Nancy answered. "Speaking of Jonathan, we need to speak to him immediately."

Clara nodded, following her sister out of her room. The two walked down the stairs, getting the attention from their mother. "Where are you guys going?"

"Girls trip!" Clara lied. "I need the car by the way."

"Okay! Be careful!" The mother advised.

Clara and Nancy grabbed their coats and bags before walking out of the house.

On the car ride to the funeral home, Nancy explained what she found out about Barb's disappearance while Clara told her the facts she knew about Will.

Once they made it to the funeral home, they ran inside, trying to get Jonathan before he left. They found out he was at the funeral home by Joyce. He was choosing Will's coffin for the funeral.

They roamed the halls, looking for Jonathan when they spotted him, speaking with a man. Jonathan observed the coffins before the twins caught his eyes. "Can you just give me a second?"

"Of course." The man nodded.

Jonathan walked over to the duo slowly. "Hey."

"Hey." Nancy greeted him back. "Can we talk for a second?"

Jonathan agreed to talk so they found somewhere to speak privately. Nancy and Jonathan sat on the bench while Clara sat on the floor, next to Nancy.

"It looks like it could be some kind of perspective distortion, but I wasn’t using the wide angle." Jonathan informed the two girls. "I don’t know. It’s weird."

Jonathan handed the photos back to Nancy, which she took out of his hands slowly. "And you’re sure you didn’t see anyone else out there?"

"No." Jonathan replied lowly. "She was there one second and then gone. I figured she bolted."

"The cops think that she ran away. But they don’t know Barb. And I went back to Steve’s and I thought I saw something. Some weird man or... I don’t know what it was." Nancy described what she saw at Steve's that day. "I’m sorry. We... We shouldn’t have come here today. I’m... I’m so sorry."

Nancy hopped off the bench with Clara following her out until Jonathan spoke. "What’d he look like? This man you saw in the woods. What’d he look like?"

"I don’t know. It was almost like he...
he didn’t have-"

"Didn’t have a face?" Jonathan finished Nancy's description.

Nancy's eyebrows furrowed as she looked at Jonathan. "How did you know that?"
