After she received Kevin's letter, Shelly went over to the McCormicks' house, where he was at the front of the house playing with his younger siblings.
More than anyone else, the boy had been extremely surprised to see his crush even more beautiful, he could barely recognize her if it weren't for those beautiful bright eyes that enchanted him deeply.
They both talked for a long time and he finally have the courage to confessed his feelings for her. Shelly felt her heart flutter, she were willing to give those new feelings a try, much to Kevin's delight.
"Hey, are you okay?" He asked worriedly, when they left the movie theater and his loved one was crying her eyes out.
He knew they shouldn't watch "The Fault in Our Stars".
"I'm fine, don't worry." She assured him between sobs, before blowing her nose into the washcloth again. "The ending it's just so beautiful and sad. Did you like the movie?"
"Not much, I'm more into horror movies, you know?" He replied. "But with you I'm up for anything."
Shelly chuckled nervously as she gave him an innocent tap on the shoulder, but her strength took him to the floor.
Pretending nothing happened, Kevin laughed and stood up.
As she escorted him home before returning to the farm, they were both spotted by Trevor and his group of popular school boys.
"Hey, is that the McCormick kid?" One of them asked, lifting his sunglasses to see if his eyesight wasn't deceiving him.
"What about him, Gabriel?" Trevor asked in a disinterested tone of voice as he spat out the lollipop stick that was in his mouth.
"He's with a hot girl." Gabriel replied. "But it's not just any girl, it's Shelly Marsh."
The boy was immediately surprised, remembering that this was the name of the ugly girl who had arranged to meet him a while ago.
"Oh, until she's not bad now." He commented as he watched, hiding that he was now feeling attracted to her.
"Yeah, it must be awful knowing you've been replaced by the alcoholic." Johnny scoffed, making him and Gabriel laugh.
"Best luck next time, big boy." Gabriel commented between laughs.
Trevor became extremely angry with those provocations, he wouldn't leave things as they were.
"If you want to know, if I want to, I can have her at my feet like before." He bragged as he ran a hand through his black hair.
"Really?" Johnny challenged him playfully.
"Just wait and see." He said, crossing the street to meet the two of them.
Shelly was intrigued when she saw Trevor approached them, as not too long ago he had no idea that Kevin or she even existed.
"Well, well, well, look who just changed their looks." He said, in a clearly flirtatious tone.
Kevin almost immediately recognized him as the boy who had ruthlessly hurt the feelings of the girl he loved, so he made no attempt to be nice.
"Yes she's beautiful." He said. "What do you want? Have you come to hurt her again?"
"I don't think what I want is any of your business, mouse boy." The boy snapped teasingly, which made Shelly furious, but she held back, not wanting to spoil the pleasant evening she had.
"Anything involving MY girlfriend is my business!" Kevin replied as he wrapped one of his arms around her waist.
Hearing that, Trevor burst out laughing, as if he'd heard the funniest joke in the world.
