CHASE MITCHELL
I smile as the knife I'd thrown hit right between the dummy's eyebrows. I was good at this.
It had been a week since we'd discovered the existence of this bunker, and I'd been coming in every morning since then to train.
"Good pitch" I stop my movements when I hear the snot voice behind me.
"How long have you been there?" I throw another knife. "Were you spying on me?"
"Don't think you're so important, vampire boy" I heard her footsteps approaching me.
"Now I have a nickname too? Interesting."
"Considering you're calling me a snot... I think we're even."
I glanced sideways at her. She was in her black tank top, baggy beige trousers and damp hair down her back. She had taken a shower as she did every day after her now three-hour workout, which told me it was almost four in the morning.
"Are you sure we're even?"
I felt her gaze on me.
"What do you mean?"
"You didn't believe me when I told you what happened a couple of days ago with Julliette and the headmistress."
She snorted.
"Awwww, and that hurt you? Did it hurt that I didn't believe you? I won't apologize, I had every right not to believe you, Chase."
I smiled to myself. I'd never told her my name, which meant she'd asked for me.
"Still... You owe me something, snot."
Heather picked up one of the knives from the table beside her, staring at the blade.
"Okay, what do you want me to give you?"
I took the knife from her hands and tossed it to her.
"What can you offer me?"
I crossed my arms as she did when all the knives I had were in the dummy. I turned around, coming face to face with Heather. She was serious.
"I need to talk to you about something important."
I raised my eyebrows in surprise.
"I guess if you want to talk to me, it's about something important" I tried to joke, but when I saw the mad look she gave me, I raised my arms in surrender. "All right, I'm getting serious. I'm listening."
"I sense that they're hiding something from us, but it's not just anything. It's definitely something big."
"And you want me to investigate with you?"
She smiles slightly.
"Well, I hadn't thought about it, although it's not a bad idea either."
I detailed her face. Her nose was slightly puckered and she was biting the inside of her cheeks. The few times we had interacted, she had always been stern, firm and defensive, but now she seemed more relaxed.
Perhaps the few hours of sleep were affecting her. I suppressed a smile so she wouldn't think I was laughing at her, that would only make her put up her barrier again.
I tilted my head slightly as I remembered the question that had been on my mind lately.
"What happened that day you were called to the principal's office?"
Her eyes widened even more.
"I knew it wasn't a dream." she whispered.
"Who made you believe that?" I questioned.
