Two years later

"I'm so glad we stuck with this summer tradition," Chan exclaimed as another clear, summer night descended on us.

"Me too," I responded, "and I'm glad we invested in this little boat." I gestured to our surroundings: our tiny metal boat, big enough to fit pillows and blankets and Chan and I comfortably in the middle.

I nestled into his chest and watched the dark hues of pinks and reds danced across the wisps of clouds that remained to west. Earlier this year, Chan had suggested that we take a boat to Lake Kachess this year and enjoy something both of us hadn't experienced yet. As if by fate, I stumbled across an ad on Facebook that an old family friend had posted. They had a small fishing boat that they had no use for anymore that needed a new home. We jumped on the opportunity, and in this moment I was elated we had.

There was no place I would rather be than where we were at that moment: cozied up in our boat, in the center of the expansive lake, watching the day turn to night. Small waves crashed against the boat from all sides, rocking us into a carefree trance.

Chan's thumb brushed back and forth against my shoulder as we sat in comfortable silence. This is what I felt with him: comfort. I felt at peace. I felt happy.

It felt surreal at times—as if I was on The Truman Show and one day this would all turn out to be fake. It felt like I was on page three-hundred of a three-hundred twenty-five page novel, and soon it would end and our book would close.

I didn't know where Chan and I's story would end, but I knew that I would wait forever to find out.
