Jake woke up to his grandma knocking on the door of his room. She asked through the door, "Jake? Jake, are you in there?" Jake sat up and said, "Yes." Jake's grandma opened the door and stepped in. She said, "I didn't hear you come home last night. How did you get in?" Jake thought and said, "I got the latter and crawled in my window." Jake remembered that the latter was in fact by his balcony. Jake's grandma nodded and said, "Okay. I'm sorry I had locked the door. I thought that perhaps you had stayed at a friend's. Well, I've got to go visit your great aunt. She's having problems again. I'll be back in a week, okay?" Jake nodded and asked, "When are you leaving?" Jake's grandma said, "Today, actually. I was just making sure you had the keys to the house and such. I had packed yesterday while you were out. I've got to catch my flight, so here's the keys." She placed the keys on a dresser by the door. She said, "I love you, Jake. Take care, okay?" Jake smiled and said, "I love you too, Grandma. I'll take care. Tell Aunt Julie I said hi." Jake's grandma nodded and closed the door to Jake's bedroom. Jake got up and stripped of his pajamas and put on a white t- shirt with his signature green skull and some jean shorts. He slipped on some high white socks and all black converse. Jake walked out his room and down the stairs. He heard his grandma's car pull out and drive away. Jake went to the kitchen to make something to eat. He made a baloney, cheese, and mayo sandwich. He ate and cleaned up his mess. When he finished, Jake went to the living room and sat down on the couch to watch TV. As he watched some random show about little creatures with miniature TVs on their stomachs, he thought to himself, "I wish Riften were here. Then maybe it wouldn't be so boring." Jake closed his eyes and sighed. When he opened them, he was greeted by a pair of blue eyes staring back at him. Jake jumped back and screamed in surprise. Jake yelled, "How the bloody hell did you get here?!" Riften said, "You called~." Jake said, "But I didn't even say anything!" Riften said, "Oh~! But I can read thoughts~! And I sensed that you were getting lonely and in need of company~!" Jake said, "Well, mate, that's true. I can tell you that much." Jake looked down at the ground, remembering his friend being murdered. Jake saw a tear fall from his eye. Jake looked up at Riften to see if he noticed, but that only made it worst. Jake was shedding tear after tear. Riften sat next to Jake and hugged him. Jake hugged back and began to sob into Riften's shoulder. After a bit, Jake calmed down and Riften pulled from the hug, holding Jake's shoulders with his hands. Riften said, "Now, could you tell me what is making you so sad?" Jake nodded and said, "My mate. The closest mate I've had my whole life. My best friend. He died. Well, actually, he was murdered by a..." Jake paused, looking at Riften dead in the eyes. Jake continued, "By a vampire." Riften said in a very serious tone, "Jake, you know I wouldn't do that. I don't even like humans' blood." Jake nodded and continued, "He was murdered two days ago. I found out yesterday. They said they couldn't find his body and they think he might have turned into a blood sucker." Riften let go of Jake's shoulders. Riften and Jake sat there in silence for a bit, until Riften decided to make conversation. Riften said, "So, this guy sound like someone you've known for a while, huh?" Jake nodded. Riften said in a much happier tone, "So~! Go on~! Tell me about him~!" Jake nodded and thought for a moment. Jake started, "His name was Dirk. It's a weird name, I know, but it was so unique to me. Jake is a common name, but Dirk... It, HE was so unique. He was the bestest pal anyone could ever ask for. He'd make you happy when you're sad, he'd defend you from bullies, he'd calm you down when you were mad. He could do anything. I, honestly, admired him. What made him so unique, though, were those orange eyes of his. I saw to the lord, you could fall into them!" Riften interrupted, "Wait. Did you say 'orange eyes'?!" Jake said in a happier time than the sad one from before, "Yes. Why?" Riften covered his own mouth and whispered with wide eyes, "Oh my god..." Jake started to get concered and asked, "Riften, what is it?" Riften said, "Take my hand. I've got to show you something." Riften put his hand up and Jake took it. Riften teleported them to his house. They were in the same room Jake first meet Riften in. Jake asked, "Riften, what are we doing at your house?" Riften took Jake's hand without a word and pulled him out the room and down a flight of stairs. They were now in Riften's basement. It was dark and very cold. Jake asked, "Riften, what are we doing in your cellar?" Riften let go of Jake's hand and said, "This~!" And slapped his hands twice. A row of candles all along the walls lit. Jake could see perfectly now. Jake couldn't believe what he saw in the middle of the room.
