(TW FOR: nongraphic mentions of blood and injury)
[I apologize briefly, as it seems italics will not copy and paste from google docs to wattpad—this is crossposted on AO3 if you want to read it with added italics/bold/underline]It had been a simple mission Kaeya was sent on just that Tuesday, or well, it would have been. He and a few other experienced knights had been sent to destroy a couple of the treasure hoarders' hideouts that had been built just a bit too close to Mondstadt, but it turns out the situation had been far more complicated than that.
One thing led to another, and Kaeya and his knights had ended up at a Fatui campsite instead of the treasure hoarders.
Not only that, but they were spotted before they could leave to get backup. He had sent two of the knights to retrieve backup, telling them to be as quick as they could.
Kaeya raised his hand forward quickly, shooting out ice to combat the fire attacks being launched at him. He looked to the right, before shouting out at his colleagues, "Watch out!"
He cursed under his breath as one of them was hit, being thrown back into the grass. He didn't appear to be injured badly, but Kaeya could tell he was out cold. He quickly turned back to the enemies in front of him, only to be met with a strong electric attack. He stumbled backwards, just barely keeping his balance before charging forward to launch another blast of cryo. The adrenaline rush kept him from being aware of just how bad the pain in his chest was, nor had he looked down to see the wound. One more of the Fatui had been knocked out by his attack, lying helplessly on the grass, just one more to go...Kaeya could handle this. He waited for her to attack for a moment, staring into her bright orange eyes, but she just smirked at him, he felt as though he was being taunted.
So Kaeya ran forward, swinging his sword with all his strength, but she had swiftly moved just out of range, swinging herself out of the way before throwing something at him. A bottle? Kaeya recognized in the brief few seconds he had to catch his footing, there was a glimmering purple liquid inside. He failed to dodge the attack.
..And for a moment, watching as the bottle shattered against him, he was confused. How on Earth could this be an effective attack? It certainly wasn't an explosive.
Then he felt the pain. A harsh stinging sensation somewhere deep in his chest as the contents of the bottled spilled on him, seeping into the wound in his chest. Fuck, had he really not noticed that? Kaeya fell to the ground as his legs gave out from under him, falling on his knees with clenched teeth. It burned, but it wasn't the kind of burn you'd get from pyro, no, this was much, much worse. He tried to put his hands out as he collapsed, attempting to break his fall, but they immediately gave out, feeling just as weak as his legs. Tears welled in his eyes, blurring his vision. It was getting hard for him to breath...fuck, he wasn't going to die because of some stupid potion, was he? The lady stared at him, giving him a grin just as he closed his eye.
He had never wanted to slap a smirk off of someone more than he did in that moment.
Diluc fastened his mask to his face before leaving the winery. He was about to return to Monstadt after hearing word of a group of abyss mages trying to infiltrate the city when something had caught his eye.
He turned, observing the scene unfolding only meters away from him.
Ah, an electro attack, that's what it was.
..No, he thought to himself, that...wasn't electro, that was an attack from Fatui. He could see them briefly when their attack lit up the area around them.
What on Teyvat were they doing? And so close to the Dawn Winery of all places?
He growled, cursing at them under his breath. It seems like Mondstadt would have to wait. If the Fatui were this close, it was possible they knew of his identity and were planning an attack. He definitely couldn't have that happening, especially well he wasn't home.
