Cough, cough, cough.

Vania was awaken by hearing her husband coughing a wild fit of coughs.

It was the middle of the night, and she scrambled to flick on the light.

Cole'd been trying to cover his cough and his face was tomato red, and then Vania saw some red on his hand, too.

"Cole, what's on your hand?"

His coughing slowed and he stared at the back of his hand, coated in dripping blood.

Alarmed, he coughed several times again, and Vania helped him to the bathroom, where he continued coughing and spat out more blood.

"Cole, don't talk, but I'll have to give you a cough pill and hope you don't choke on it," Vania tried to say calmly.

"Mmm," Cole replied, and each cough seared the back of his throat. Tears slipped out of his red eyes.

The sound was deafening: raspy coughs and groans from his clearly irritated throat.

After five minutes or so, Vania gave him a cough pill which made the cough slow and then stop.

But the next morning he coughed again.
