The Truth

"Dad! That you? You've been ages! I'm starving!" Susan appears from the kitchen.

"Starving huh? What are you doing here? I thought you were at Charlie's tonight?"

"Sure.. but he's at a gig that I didn't wanna go to soo.. I thought we could have some time together since you're always busy.." and then she notices me.. stood awkwardly away from Nathan.

"Miss Jones? What are you doing here?" She asks with a confused look.

"I uh.. had some papers to pick up off your dad.." yeah she'll totally believe that.. not.

"Mhm.." she looks between us and then notices Nathan's ever so slightly opened shirt and she finally puts two and two together..

"Hold up.. wait a second.. you two.. you didn't come here for paperwork did you?" She points at me.

"And you.." pointing back at Nathan.. "you've been acting super weirdly happier recently, which I've never been able to understand why.. and then you went away for a week which you never ever do.. it's her isn't it?"

It's so awkward I wish I could just run out now but I suppose now it's time to face the truth.

"She's the one who's been making you happy recently?"  She hesitates a little, clearly working it all out in her head.

"Are you two.. are you together?"

We all just look back and forth to each other. I have no idea what to say so I just look between the two of them and give Nathan a slight nod.. for him to confirm.. if he wants her to know it's fine by me..

"Yes.." he nods and her face is shook. "Suzie..I'm sorry I didn't tell you.." he comforts her.

She looks at me in what I would say horror before looking back at Nathan and pushing him away.

"Dad! Ewww! So you totally brought her back here so you two could bang? That's so not cool.." she starts to freak out.. "and so disgusting..just eww! I can't believe you wouldn't tell me you've started dating again! And with another teacher! Man this is so weird.."

"Is it really that weird? I'm sorry we didn't tell you but.. she's amazing, and yeah.."

"Let me..Get my head around this.. so you're a couple?"

"Yes.. we're together as in a couple.." he reaches out and takes my hand in his.

"No one knows.. apart from you and Katie's sister..so.. could you keep it quiet for now? Until we work out if we can tell anyone?"

"Why can't you? You're both adults.."

"I know but.. we just want to keep it on the low for now.." He squeezes my hand which only prompts me to interrupt them.

"I'm sorry guys.. I've ruined your father/daughter night.. I'll leave you be.."

"No you don't have to..I can go to a friends or something.." she shrugs but I shake my head.

"No.. it's clear you both need that quality time.. it's important.. it's ok I promise.. I'll uh.. see you guys later.." I wave awkwardly and head to the front door.

"Wait..Suzie just give us a sec.." I hear as Nathan runs after me and stops me, I look down as he places his larger hand over mine stopping me from opening the door.

"Are you sure? You can stay if you want.."

"She's needing her dad..But at least she knows about us, the truth is out and it means we don't need to sneak around here anymore.." I go to give him a quick peck on the cheek but he catches it by moving his head so I peck his lips instead.
