"I fell in love the way you fall asleep: slowly, and then all at once." - John Green
Chapter 12: Arrogant assholes and blushing flames
In a small house in a relatively small town, erected on a relatively short street called Winston, two figures could be seen sitting in a brightly coloured living room.
One of these figures, a redhead, had a sudden pause of hesitation on what to say. Downing the last few drops of her chai tea, she begins explaining everything that's been going on in her mind.
"Tine' you know I've been apart of the Kazansky family my whole life - I thought that I was their actual daughter." She takes a deliberate sigh, "guess now that I look back on things, the signs were quite obviously telling something different. You know, I think, in the back of my mind I knew - maybe it was the fact that I was the only one with red hair... maybe it was the fact that I never actually fit in..."
"I was always different to the rest of my family - reckless, doing things before even thinking twice, always wanting to be right, disobeying orders... but did I ever think that I was abandoned on a doorstep by my own mother? No I don't think so..." Spitfire shakes her head repeatedly with a faraway look ever present in her eyes.
"I'm not angry at them - perhaps deep down I resent them for not telling me but I'm trying to convince myself that they had a good reason." Spitfire tries to convince not only Christine but herself as well. "I'm sure they had a good reason for not telling me..." she trails off.
The girl stays silent for a few seconds before sighing dejectedly, "If I had just known, if they had just told me, this whole situation could have been different. For one, I wouldn't have been blindsided when Maverick approached me the other day. The sad fact is, I can't even change the past... but I know I can change the future - and I'll be damned if I let anyone stop me."
Spitfire continues glaring at her hands before slowly turning her head towards Christine, not daring to make eye contact with the woman - scared of the reaction that she would get. She hears a sigh from next to her before feeling a hand grab her own.
"Honey, you're allowed to be upset about this. They were in the wrong for not telling you but one thing I know for sure, they wouldn't have kept this from you without good reason. Don't let something like this bring you down." Christine squeezes the younger woman's hand before clearing her throat.
"Spitfire look at me," hesitantly the girl in question raises her head and meets the soft eyes of the woman she sees as a mother. Many emotions swirl around in both of their eyes as their gazes lock onto one another.
"Honey, your mother is one hell of an idiot for giving you away. She can't meet this amazing, talented, feisty and dare I say it, stubborn grown woman that you've become and trust me when I say, she's missing out on a lot."
Without realising it, Spitfire raised her shoulders in a shrug, as if indifferent to the words, while angling her head away at feeling a warm glow rise up into her face, the feeling of blood rushing to her normally stoic face. Somehow she knew her cheeks were turning a soft pink colour.
She didn't blush often but one brush of a finger over her fair-skinned cheek told her that she was glowing from within.
Trying to hide her emotions she changes the subject, "but for what reasons would they not tell me? Dad usually tells me everything..."
Christine sighs before giving Spitfire a heated glare, "Honey stop overthinking this! If you just go and talk to Tom then may-" She gets cut off by the younger girl scoffing.
"No way am I going to do that right now, I won't even be able to look at him without crying..." Spitfire explains sadly but with a confused look flashing across Christine's face she continues.
