Amanda bolts to her feet, her hands clenched into tight fists at her sides.
"You have got to be kidding me," she growls so lowly that I am forced to suppress a dangerous shudder. "Please tell me that you are joking."
"I really wish that I was," I say. My cheek rests against my palm, my elbow propped against the edge of my desk. Kylie sits on the edge of the bed quietly, her legs crossed and her hands cupped around her knee. Her expression is disturbed. Amanda stands within the space between us.
Kylie pinches her lips together. "That is very low, even for Seth," she says after a few moments. "Though I shouldn't be too surprised. His mother is a huge bitch."
I nod. "I can see that now. She's very protective, and delusional, about her sweet little baby boy," I coo sarcastically.
Amanda grunts. "She's about to have a rude wake-up call."
I sigh. My hand rubs over the rounded bump on my stomach. I can hear my mother bustling around in the kitchen below our feet. I haven't told her yet; I don't want her to "accidentally" run over Seth's mother while grocery shopping. We don't have the money right now for a lawsuit.
"We need to do something," Amanda announces. Her gaze is cold and calculating. I fear her slightly in this moment and, for the fist time since this whole ordeal began, actually pity Seth a bit.
"Like what?" I arch an eyebrow at her.
Amanda smacks her fist against her palm. Her eyes gleam wickedly. "I've got it. Get dressed; make sure to wear dark colors. We're going shopping."
I decide that there is no use in arguing. I stand and waddle over to my closet. I fish out an old pair of yoga pants and a dark t-shirt, and quickly change. When I emerge from the closet, Kylie steps inside. I think she has gotten over her reservation of stealing my old clothes. Amanda waits patiently by the door; she didn't have to change, she'd gone to school in all black.
My mom gave us odd looks as we hustled down the stairs in suspiciously matching dark colored outfits, at least until Amanda told her that we were preparing for Seth's funeral, which frightened Kylie and I a bit. My mother smiled slightly at that.
We climb into Amanda's van. I steal the passenger seat, and Kylie climbs into the back. The car rumbles to life and pulls out of the drive way. Darkness has fallen across the sky; I glance at the clock, it's about five o'clock. The radio fills the silence of the van. It doesn't take long to get to our destination, which turns out to be the run down Walmart outside of my neighborhood. Amanda immediately drags us toward the party supplies section. Kylie loops her arm through mine as we stop in front of an arrangement of silly string.
"What are you planning?" she asks Amanda warily.
"We're going to add a little spice to that car of his," Amanda says cheerfully.
Kylie hesitates. "Can't we get into serious trouble for that, though?" she asks. Her gaze flickers toward me as Amanda starts to grab a handful of spray-cans. She skims through the colors in search of the girly, pastels.
"Only if we get caught," I remark. To be honest, I'm not completely against the idea. Seth deserves so much worse than this, in my opinion.
"And what do we say if we do?" Kylie presses. Amanda passes her a can of light yellow.
"Nothing. We won't get caught," Amanda says sternly. She pats Kylie's shoulder and smiles a reassuring smile. "It'll be okay, I promise."
I nod in agreement.
Kylie makes an unsure noise. Amanda hugs a can of light blue to her chest, and drags us toward the grocery aisles. She grabs a massive pack of eggs, and a wad of toilet paper. Then she leads us toward the checkout counters. We pay for our weapons and then trudge back out to the van. We climb in and start toward Seth's house. I'd only been there once, and didn't quite remember the way. But thankfully Kylie had practically lived there for two years.
Amanda parked the van a few houses down from Seth's mansion, in front of a mass of bushes. Her tattered old rust bucket stood out against the posh cars that decorated the street. Darkness hugged the world; the only light that illuminated the street was from the bright white stars and a few streetlights scattered about. We pause and stare at the massive house. My gaze immediately locks onto our target, the sexy black mustang that I'd fallen in love with. It almost pains me to do this.
"Is anybody home?" Amanda asks.
"Seth is," Kylie says. Her gaze scans over the house. "But not his mom. The butler must have gone home for the night as well. That's who we really had to worry about."
We share a look and then start toward the target. I carry a can of light pink silly string and a roll of toilet paper. Amanda has her light blue string and the eggs. Kylie still seems hesitant. "What if the police get involved?" she whispers as we stalk up the driveway toward the car.
"Don't jinx us," Amanda hisses back at her.
I snicker. We stop in front of the car and I set the toilet paper down on the ground. Amanda gestures toward me. "Pregnant woman first."
I shake my can of silly string and then pop the top. The slight popping noise that it makes seems to echo throughout the night. I step closer to the car and take a deep breath. "Goodbye, beautiful," I whisper to the car. Then I press down on the nozzle.
The first thing that I do is draw a massive penis on the hood.
I couldn't help myself.
Amanda adds decorations around the lovely picture, and Kylie hesitantly sprays at the side. I work quickly with Amanda to completely cover the car. Once we are both satisfied, we step back to admire our work. Kylie follows suit. "Can we go home now?"
"No, we've still go the eggs," Amanda says.
We walk a few feet away, farther down the driveway. Amanda holds out the carton of eggs toward me and Kylie, offering us the first throw. I grab two eggs and draw my hand back. I hurl the eggs with all my might toward the car.
One of them hits with a satisfying splat!
Amanda and I really get into it. Kylie is still hesitant. It surprises me a little; she'd always been such a bitch to me at first, that I thought she got in trouble normally or would be cool with this kind of thing.
By the fifth egg that actually hits, the car's alarm starts to blare.
Amanda grabs the silly string, but abandons the eggs. She grabs Kylie and I by the arm. We break into a run as lights flip on within the mansion, and then the lights outside. We reach the van just as Seth exits the house, and are shielded by the bushes.
The only reason I am positive of this is because, as I open the door to the van and start to climb in, I hear, "What the hell?!" The horrified shout echoes within the silence of the night.
The van thunders to life. It tears away from the curb and the horn blares as we passed Seth's house. Amanda erupts into an evil cackle.
Her laughter is infectious.
