[In the car]
"Team leader" I called out drawing his attention towards me. He looked at me for a brief of seconds and hummed in response before focusing back on the road.
"Detective Na told me what happened back in 2008," I said and I expected him to be surprised but instead he looked rather calm as if he would've told me about it sooner or later. His eyes were fixed on the road and his hands on the steering wheel but it felt as if all his attention was on me.
"Do you also feel pity for me after knowing what happened?" He asked and the question was as if he has been in this situation and he already knew what the reactions would be of anyone.
"It's not pity, team leader. I just wanted to tell you that... how you had Detective Na back then who saved you, similarly this time, you have me. I'll save you and be by your side" I said and I could see his lips curve and form into a small smile. He did not reply but his expression was enough for an answer.
"Team leader" I called out once again
"Yes?"
"What is happiness according to you?" I questioned
"Ms. Y/n.... happiness has no definition. You can call it... the calmness you feel which makes you smile because of something or someone" He replied
"It is like the smile on the face of a child when he gets an ice cream or the smile on the face of the grandparents when they meet their grandchild for the first time right?" I asked as he nodded in response. I rolled down the window of the car letting the cold air mixed with the warm sunlight enter the car.
"When were you the happiest, team leader?" I questioned
"Me? I think it was when I graduated from Seoul university and I saw my grandma boasting about it to her friends" He replied making me giggle
"No, I lied. I feel like I'm the happiest every time you smile at me and it makes me happy knowing that I may be the reason behind that smile of yours"
"When were you the happiest, Ms. Y/n?" He asked. I took a glance at him before answering,
"When I got a job in IREN & co," I replied with a smile
"No, I am the happiest every time I hear you calling my name"
"Do you know when I saw detective Na being the happiest?"
"When?"
"When he was talking about how he met Yura. I'm sure he loves her a lot more than he knows. I just hope he always smiles like this" I replied
"Yes... he deserves this" Team leader mumbled the last part which I could hear and this time when he talked about detective Na, his eyes weren't of rage or hatred. It was as if he was finally trying to accept the fact that whatever happened had nothing to do with detective Na because deep down somewhere in his mind he knew detective Na did not do wrong but instead he saved team leader. I can't wait to see them get along.
[Time skip: Evening; Hospital]
".... so, I think I like him" Yura whispered into my eyes. I looked at her first and she gave me a nod. I looked at detective Na who was on the sofa going through some documents. I'm going to take back what I said to team leader. Detective Na will probably be the happiest when he finds out that Yura likes him back. But should I tell Yura that detective Na likes her? Or should I just let them be? I smiled thinking about it when the door slid open revealing the doctor along with a police officer.
"Detective Na... I think you should see this" the officer said and without saying anything, Detective Na left the room. The doctor said that the nurse would be changing Yura's bandages. I left the room because it could risk the chance of infection. I spotted team leader by the coffee vending machine and when I walked toward him, he handed me a can of fruit juice.
"It gives you energy and nourishes your skin," He said making me chuckle when detective Na came running toward us. His expression clearly showed that something was wrong.
"Detective Na... what's wrong?"
"We checked the university records for Choi Haneul. We got his address from there and when we went there, we met his mother and she said that he had died three years back. He usually went to an arcade every Friday but one night, he did not return. After two days, the police found his dead body dumped in a lake. The police investigated but couldn't find any clue so they declared it as a kidnapping and murder case but they had missed one thing" He said but I was too shocked to even react. The more we dig into it, the more complicated it gets.
"What was it?" Team leader inquired
"He died after being hit several times by a hammer"
"WHAT" I nearly yelled but before I could say anything further, someone bumped into me causing me to stumble fortunately team leader caught me.
"Hey! Watch where you are going!" Team leader said and caught his shoulder which caused his sleeves to rise a bit. I looked at detective Na who had wide eyes as I looked back at the man and that's when I saw a glimpse of the rose tattoo on his hand. By this time, team leader had also seemed to notice the tattoo
"The rose tattoo" I breathed out and the next thing I knew was that we three were chasing the man in front of us who was the so-called hammerhead killer. We ran down the stairs all the way outside the hospital chasing the man. The moment we were outside, team leader and detective Na caught the man but my eyes widened when I realized the mistake we had just made.
"He isn't the killer! The killer had the tattoo on his left hand but he has it on his right hand!" I said and they both looked at his hand and I was indeed correct. He just tricked us. Before we could process what to do anything further, we were shaken by a loud noise as if something had just fallen from the top. We turned around and it seemed like our worst nightmare had just come true.
Someone fell from the window and lay lifelessly on the ground with blood surrounding the person and it was her.... it was Yura. Detective Na and I rushed towards Yura while team leader rushed inside to call the doctors. Tears welled up in my eyes when I saw Yura lying like that but what broke me more was seeing detective Na. He desperately gave her CPR and tapped her cheeks to wake her up.
"Y/n-n... thank you-u for saving-g me.... and Jaemin-n... sorr-y... I couldn'-t tell you... sorry, I love-e you" She said with tears rolling down her eyes. She struggled to breathe and at that moment, detective said only one thing.
"Yura-a... don'-t die-e"
