"That bastard! How dare you tell me that I now have to work with him for the rest of this goddamn contract!"
The three women sat in the library, the only light in the room coming from the fireplace in the wall. The sky outside was black with clouds, with rain hitting the glass windows hard. It was cold inside the home due to the cold winter air outside.
"Lilith, relax. You're going to wake everyone in the manor if you keep yelling." Valeria sipped her tea while her maid kept pacing the room. "I did what I had to. It's best for us to stay here, we have protection here. People won't target us as much here."
"Even so, my lady, I'm being forced to work with that bastard while you and his master get all lovey dovey. Currently, I am seething with rage at the prospect of having to work with him anymore than I have to."
"We're not going to be 'lovey dovey', Lilith! This entire engagement is for social reasons, nothing more."
"Sure it is, Valeria. You're acting like Adelia and I haven't seen the looks you give that boy whenever you're around him."
The room became silent, with both Valeria and Adelia looking over at Lilith. Valeria's face was as red as her nightgown, while Adelia looked on and sighed. Lilith was more than right, she hit the nail directly on the head.
"Adelia, is that true?" Valeria turned to her friend.
Adelia sighed. "I'm afraid it is, Val. We've all seen it."
"Oh, don't think you're safe, Adelia." Lilith was quick to snap back. "I've seen how you stare at that gardener boy. Finny, right?"
Now Adelia's face had become red. Lilith really knew how to embarrass people, didn't she?
"W-What in the world are you talking about, Lilith? I haven't said a word about that!" Adelia fell backwards onto the couch, covering her face with her hand.
"It was obvious, with the rose in your hair and the way you two came inside beet red. Please, if you want to keep it secret you must hide it better." Lilith walked back to the fire place, placing another log inside the fire to keep it burning.
She sat down on one of the velvet chairs, watching the fire crackle in the fireplace. Its warmth reminded her of hell, but the flames were far too small. The actual flames would burn for days, and would spread like wildfire over hundreds of feet. It made her miss the days of fulfilling quick contracts, ones where she could burn the people that were supposed to die and taking their souls.
But it mostly reminded her of one particular incident.
"Seriously, now I have to work around that idiot, and now I can't even face him after what happened at that ball." Lilith muttered.
"What happened at the ball, Lilith?" Valeria looked at the demon, watching as her lavender eyes reflected the flames.
She gave a sigh. "Tyber was being rather annoying about finding out if we were actually married or not, so Sebastian resolved the matter by.... kissing me."
"WHAT?!?"
They both looked at Lilith in disbelief, watching how her face sunk and she held her head in her hands. "I know, I was horrified. But please, don't say a word about this to absolutely anyone. This stays between us."
"Are you serious?!? I thought you would kill him on the spot if he did that!"
"I would have liked to, but we were in public, and that would be bad for everyone."
Valeria and Adelia kept bombarding her with questions, not even giving her a break to breathe. It wasn't surprising that they were so questioning about this, especially since the two hated each other so much, and so adamantly.
"Alright, alright. Enough questioning, we can save all this for another time. I'm going to prepare for tomorrow."
